In a recent survey most of the Egyptians wanted fundamental islam to be their base of laws and everything. With this you can expect that its just going to be another middle eastern country. They don't own oil as much as other coutries of mid east do, so the best hope for them is to lie flat in front of US and get donations from them every year and keep going like Pakistan. 10/10 for humour.

Actually Egypt used to be a food exporter for millenia. But, there are barely 200 sq meters of arable land per person-- a lot of soil destruction and a lot of people. They actually are losing 3-4 sq m of arable land per person per year. And population is young and growing. I say Egyptians were doomed since the time they killed their last hippo.

I blame their very poor government for this primarily. It should have educated people or given them the means to survive somewhat independently, as all government should. If Big Bro' aint telling you the best place to get seeds, ridding tax on precious metals or encouraging citizen armament, then it's nothing but a hollow front for something or someone else. Looks like they'll be a huge demand for voluntary workers soon. Forget sending "aid" there, the best thing anyone could do is go there and help out. I'm rather sceptical of foreign aid and money-sending charities.
