What was your breaking point to earning high profits?

I've read a lot of stories on Digital Point about people who started small and are now earning a good sum of money. I'm curious to know what happened that made the earnings for these people jump.

I started a website 3 years ago which was earning pennies. Now with 2 websites I earn dollars, but not much and most is from the original website. My ads are placed well, colored well, available for placement targetting and are text & image ads. My niche is pretty good and I rank pretty well on Google for important keywords. I add content at least weekly to both sites. But month-to-month my earnings don't increase by much.

I've seen some people on here who start low and each month their earnings get higher and higher in much bigger jumps than I've experienced. So if you're one of those people, what were those moments that made your earnings go up? Is it something you can measure and replicate?

Everybody will say that is all about traffic and content, the more traffic and content you have more clicks and more cash. Simple to understand.

Also niche type, ad placement will be a important factor for your earnings.

It can't just be traffic and content. That's an oversimplification. Some sites get heavy traffic and don't earn. Same thing with content rich sites. Even combinations of the two don't always work out.

So that leaves me to wonder, is it niche that makes or breaks you? I've seen an increase in my niches over time but nothing as large as I've read in many stories here.

Is it recommended to try 10 different niches out and then cut off the ones that don't "work" to find the ones that do work?

I've been around long enough to know what colors to use, where to place ads, etc. etc. I don't need to be educated on those things. But there's something that I feel like I'm missing, so what is it?

I hoping to have my breaking point soon with hard work and dedication. Right now my website is only making from 20 cents to 2 dollars a day. It's pretty good for a new site, but its needs to be more consistant around the $2/day earnings.

You first need unique content, then traffic and then you need to work on optimizing your AdSense placements.
A CTR increase from 1% to 2% will double your income with the same traffic. That is why using Channels is important.
You also should never stop optimizing your Ad Placements. Experiment with different locations, different font sizes,
different colors, different sizes. In some spots for example a Large rectangle will have a much higher CTR then a Medium Rectangle,
however a medium rectangle mostly has a much higher CPC so you need to figure out which one is better for your Ad location.

Doesn't that go against the idea of optimizing in the first place? Once you find the "best" configuration shouldn't you stop? How do you know when you're "optimized"?

How far can you manipulate ads before your visitors become untrusting?

Projet Mobius is right, it's all about traffic and content, so those who say the contrary are clearly mistaken. Of course you don't want mindless/useless traffic such as flash games or desktop wallpapers. But as long as you're in a "correct" niche for CPC > $0.1 then you're fine and all you need is traffic.
To answer the original question I think the breaking point is when you understand that traffic is most important for adsense earnings (which isn't exactly true for other kind of earnings) and that you take steps to increase your number of ad impressions month by month, then your earnings will also improve.
And how to increase traffic? Not by submitting to social bookmarking and other things you read all the time on forums, no, simply produce content that people are searching for, the traffic will flow in don't you worry about that part!

I'm in a similar situation to the you OP but I don't yet have enough traffic to really make a good assumption as to the possible earnings really :(

Of course traffic and content is the key, but to gain more traffic for your website you need to look for new keywords in your niche and try to create content based on those new keywords and try to reach good rankings in search engines.

Thank you to all who have replied so far.

I just looked over all of my data since I started with adsense and comparing some graphs I do realize that an increase in traffic equates to an increase in earnings. I guess what caused me to post here to begin with is that I've been unimpressed with the length of time it's taken to earn what I'm earning now - which is nothing to cry about, but not what I had hoped for.

I've read many of the "inspiring" stories on here - and while some do seem like fakes some also sound real. Some talk of starting with $10 a month, then a few months later $100 then by the end of the year $500. I'm currently earning more than $100 a month but it's taken me almost 3 years to get to that point.

Like many here I dream of one day being able to work from home. Or maybe to only have to rely on a part-time job. At my current rate I'd need 9 more websites earning the same as the one I started 3 years ago to be able to afford my minimum bills.

So... I have no doubts that content is important and it's what brings traffic to a website. But how fast can you bring lasting traffic? The idea of trying to manage 10 websites and constantly move traffic to them seems daunting. I don't doubt that it's possible and I understand to make money takes hard work, but I have to wonder if there are important things that I am missing - things that only those with more experience know. If someone has good advice that hasn't been repeated 1,000 times on these forums please come forth and offer it! :)

In the meantime thank you to all who have replied.

Hello I have written two texts that I think can help you clearing out at least two things:
What is needed for digging adsense goldmine: traffic
What should be your objective? Your goal?
So that once you have a clear plan, you can focus on working on executing the plan and in a matter of months you'll get there if you don't change direction or lose motivation in the meantime.

I had two breaking points, actually:

    1) Figuring out how to replace my hard work with a working system that does not require my involvement.
    2) Figuring out how to CREATE NEW niches instead of trying to dominate a competitive one. Example: such sites like chatroulette don't have competition, and most likely never will.
