Let's Clarify

Though I cannot say I am a old member here in DP, but I did read through loads of post in this AdSense forum about people earning loads and loads of money and people throwing out different ways to optimize your ads, etc. Some say they earn $20 a day and would like to increase it to $45, some say blending your ads are good for your earnings. But obviously, most of them don't emphasis on one important factor that determines their success or so-called tips. That is, as far as I'm concerned, PAGEVIEW. It is ridiculous to think of earning $10 a day if you only have a few hundred pageviews a day. Most of those who earn more than $10 a day has pageview of over 5000 a day (correct me if I am wrong). So what I want to say is that, you shouldn't focus too much on optimization or those niche / keyword stuff. FOCUS ON YOUR TRAFFIC. No traffic = low earning. After you got traffic, go to optimize the ads, and use higher paying keywords within your site's subject. Set up reasonable goals for yourself and don't think beyond that.

I hope this could clarify some misunderstanding going around here. Please do correct me if I am wrong.

I believe 80% of one's time should be devoted to content while 20% should be devoted to SEO.

The 80/20 rule always seems to work.

50/50 should be right. If you get good content but do nothing, I'm quite sure search engines will never find you and no one will link to you and that means your PR will never go up which results in no traffic.

Well, of course keeping your content unqinue is important but I am talking about those optimization and keywords.

Most publishers may need over 5K a day to score more than $10, but certainly not all. I can pull ~$20/day with ~1,000 impressions on a consistent basis and I'm sure there must be many others who do the same.

I do, however, totally agree with you about the importance of traffic. If I could draw 5,000 impressions a day, I'd be in fat city. Increasing traffic is my primary focus right now.

Let's make it like this - a chart that estimates the earnings for a certain range of traffic:

    1 - 500 ~ $1/day
    500 - 1K ~ $5/day
    1K - 2K ~ $10
    2K - 5K ~ $20
    5K - 10K ~ $50
    10K ~ 100K ~$50-100

Anyone can correct me with your own real case?

you are totally correct - the BIG secret to earnings is TRAFFIC .. When my site was new, I spent at least 50% of my time working on backlinks, and other creative (yet 'legal') methods of generating traffic..
Why blow ALL your time optimizing ads that nobody will see?

Yea, if you got a site that has so GREAT content but only get pageviews from yourself correcting the ad placement, I mean, what is the point?

All I can speak from is my own limited experience with Adsense. I have one particular site which I guess could be considered fairly "niche" that only gets 1300 unique visitors a month (about 90 page views a day), yet the site gets average 8 clicks a day and makes a couple of hundred bucks every month.

Every site is different and will give you different results.

    Yep traffic is $$$$
You could have the best site if you can't have traffic no money

I agree with more traffic, but I've seen $90-$100 with only 5K pageviews and only $25 with about 15K pvs. I think it's impossible to gage how much traffic will result in earnings, but overall, great post.

Agreed. But it's a far cry from the table of stats you proposed as standard measure. The point is that if my niche commands avg $0.80 clicks, it will be vastly different from a site that only gets $0.02 clicks.

One other point. Yes, traffic is the major component. However, I'm not sure how someone could be spending all their time optimizing their ads if they have no traffic. The only way to tweak them effectively is to make changes and then monitor the results. But if there's no traffic to begin with, how do you measure results?

Yes, well then, I have to say that you have to choose a good niche THEN followed by traffic LAST optimization.

With 500 impressions there is no big deal to make $10 / day.

I dare not to focus on my traffic now.
Even I did not focus anything on traffic right now, I always almost used up all my bandwidth - (on a free hosting :p )
I will start to boost my traffic once I have my International call service ready, and I will fax the form to DreamHost.
I believe I can focus on driving traffic freely by then, and believe that I won't use up 2000GB bandwidth a month.
