The most important thing you can do is, you please ensure and carefully research your keywords, identifying the phrases most likely used to find your Web site.

Choose high PR sites and Try building more back links with your chosen keyword as your anchor text.

Keep your content as unique and fresh. Do Social Bookmarking and other link-building strategies.

    1. Content: Try to write as much content (with quality) for your website. You can either write a blog or update your website pages internally; OR you can also participate in guest blogging and article submission to market your content. Quality content improves your on-page SEO as well as it makes your site more authoritative (specially for Google).

    2. Title tag: One of the most important influencing factor on website ranking is title tag. Write a "call-to-action" website titles and within character limit of 70. You can target 2-3 keyword phrases in each page (as long as the keywords are present in page content.

    3. H1 & H2 tags: Using proper headings is also vital and has a huge impact on SERPs.

    4. Backlinks: I would say what most SEO pros use to say; "always" go for quality link rather than quantity.

    Hope this helps.

So, its only content, keywords and proper backlinks are the only factors that will influence SEO results? What about W3C Standards, Social Media and bookmarking kind of stuff?

SEOmoz has quite a good list, including positive and negative factors (make sure to click through to "see all"): http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors

As for some of the suggestions above:

Meta description - is used by Google to display info about your page, but it is not a ranking factor.
text/html ratio - is not a ranking factor
xml sitemaps - helps Google to discover all your pages, but it is not a ranking factor.
W3C validity - sites with code errors can prevent Googlebot from crawling your pages, but standards compliance is not a ranking factor.

    BIGGEST FACTOR - DOMAIN NAME
Have a domain name with the exact keywords you try to rank for, makes your ranking process much faster

    then of course you have:
    * backlinks
    * freshness of content - how often it is updated

    Well:

W3C doesn't have "that much" impact on search results or to your SEO. However, clean coding is always good.

Social media and bookmarking do have a good traffic potential but they are generally used for conversions (SMO) & backlinks (SB). I did mention quality backlinks.

the main factor is content. the content should be relevant to the website theme, and should not be spammy. there should not be too many outgoing links from your website.
the second thing is title tag. the title tag should contain your main keyword.
the third most important thing is how many links point from high ranking sites back to your site. more the number of high value links with your keyword as the anchor text, more is the PR of your website.
