How can a site have PR without any back links?

I've been buying some back links on sites with a PR of 3 & 4 but I noticed when I check the back links for these sites that some have none or just a couple.

How can these sites have PR 3 & 4 without having any back links pointing to them?

I though PR was gained though having back links

not sure if how they got PR when they don't have backlinks.
probably because they only got 2 backlinks but from higher PR and related site.

Maybe fake PR, or they had backlinks with the previous OR update, and don't have them anymore!

Yes backlinks should be there to get PR.... But age is also a big factor in getting PR.

Based on age,a domain dont get PR.A domain gets Pagerank on the backlinks the domain has.For example,If the domain has PR4 backlink,it will get PR2 or PR3 :)

A natural PR4 would normally have 100's of backlinks from a significant number of unique domains.

Personally, I check all domains on http://opensiteexplorer.org/ and won't buy a domain, unless it has a domain/page authority of at least 40 with several hundred links spread over at least 50 root domains.

The best explanations is that they used to have backlinks, probabbly paid backlinks and they just stopped paying and thats it ;)

I think PR really depunds upon website age. My website have PR 3 but very little backlinks (before SEO) and website is 3 years old.

It is about the quality of your links not just the quantity, also it could be that all the links are not showing up as they are too new, or it could be that the owner has another site which does have many backlinks redirected to this site.

I see this all the time when I check sites for back links.

Here's an example - http://northstarbluesandbbq.com/ - This site is PR3 yet according to yahoo site explorer it has no back links

I know yahoo site explorer is not 100% acurate but zero back links is strange

Lol.... Are you serious? Why are you buying links on high PR sites? Its better to buy links on sites that have a lot of indexed pages, and worthy content to link to you.

    A rather condescending answer!

Yes I'm serious, I was under the impression that a link from a topic relevant page with PR & unique content would help increase my sites rankings – that's why I look to buy links on this kind of page/site.

I also though that having a link would pass page rank to my site which would in turn build trust & authority of my site.

Thanks for the tip about "buy links on sites that have a lot of indexed pages" though, that's useful

Anyway, the question is – how can a site have PR without any back links, it's something I see often & wondered why.

Thats 71 pages - on the "show in links" drop down select "exept from this domain" you will see there are no back links pointing to this PR3 domain

There are many other factors and conclude one thing, PR is not entirely about backlinks, besides it is a rank of site importance so it's content has something to do with PR.

Also, inner page link to those page might passing PR juice too.
