...build deep links into the subpages of your website with the anchor text matching your targeted key terms, from other websites cached often by the major search engines...

Put relevant keywords in title tag of subpages which is relevant to that webpage. Try to make backlink for that perticular page with that perticular keyword..Hope this would help you...

Only building backlink for the subpages is not enough guys. There are so many onpage factor come when Google pick up your subpages for a particular keyword.

    1. Are your subpages are perfectly optimized for the targeted keyword? Like meta title, meta description, keyword density, img optimization, title tag optimization.
    2. Is Google crawler understanding your website navigation and link structure? Search engine friendly navigation is very much important to pick up the subpages of your website.
    3. The depth of the inner pages, if your inner pages like this yourwebsite.com/folder/subfolder, it is very hard to crawl and indexed such pages.

And lots of factor include here.

Ranking deep pages is no different from ranking your home page:

    1. Decide what keywords you want to rank for.
    2. Build those pages.
    3. Optimize on-page: Put your keyword in the title tag.
    4. Write a unique meta description that is designed to get the click.
    5. Optimize on-site: Make sure your sub-pages are properly linked to from other pages on your site and that your desired keyword is in the anchor text.
    6. Optimize off-site #1: Get quality/quantity links to your home page to grow your site's authority. Ensure natural incoming anchor text.
    7. Optimize off-site #2: Get quality/quantity links to the sub-pages. Ensure natural incoming anchor text.

If your keywords are not very competitive, you should be seeing good SERPs already by the time you reach step 3-5. For more competitive keywords, you will need both, authority site (step 6) and also enough quality links to your sub-pages (step 7).

Build links as you did for your homepage. Fix some keywords for those pages and build links.

That is not true. There is no problem with a website structure which is two levels deep.

Yes, but you first need to make certain that your sub-pages are being treated ideally in the search engines. On-site PR should circulate through your entire website. You should have a text navigation system on all pages to harness the link power throughout your website, including a text link back to your homepage on all pages. If the search engines (Google in particular) are devaluing the PR on your sub-pages, then you're losing out on this circulation process, which acts very much like an electrical circuit. If you examine the issue, you'll see some sites with a Google PR of say 5, and then many of the sub-pages (and not new pages, either) with a gray bar. The pages are indexed as you might expect them to be, but it's clear that they aren't treated in the same manner. Links on these pages, whether to other pages on your site or to other websites, do have value, but not the value they should have.

You'll get more benefits BACK to your homepage if your sub-pages are treated equally by the search engines. Taking some extra time to make your sub-pages valuable and unique is worth the effort, and will only enhance the benefits you desire for homepage traffic.

A couple of people have already mentioned it but I would like to reinforce the fact that the best way to get the sites ranking is to not only build links but to link each page properly within the site. It is important to have strong site navigation for all of the sub pages. If there are only a few sub pages then use site wide links if there are several then use a drop down navigation menu. Also when possible use a targeted keyword in the navigation.

There should be a good internal linking in your website and build quality back links for sub pages on targeted keywords.
