So have we all agreed that Analytics is alot more accurate than AWStats?

I haven't been on this forum in a while. I checked the visitors to my website yesterday.

    AWStats: 52 visits
    Analytics: 12 visits

    AWStats: 296 page views
    Analytics: 49 page views

    Which do I believe?

    Thanks

Both services should be capable enough to show the same (correct) results. Are you viewing Google Analytics' unique visitors compared to AW's total visitors?

Google is probably giving you unique page views against total page views. Do a little digging.

Awstats uses apache log files and Analytics uses JS to get it's data. For me there can't be anything more accurate than apache log files because if the server is working properly then these should be accurate too.

But on Analytics a simple misload of the JS file or even turning JS off on the browser can cause inaccurate data in Analytics.

So if you ask me Awstats is much more accurate than Analytics!

Depends on how they are measuring the traffic.
I like to use Analytics and stick with that over other stuff.

Wow - thanks for that information! I'd never installed AWStats before (jused used it on clients' servers) but that is pretty fundamental haha. Great to know for next time!

When looking at discrepancies between Google Analytics and AWStats in the past, the difference was always in what was counted. In my experience Analytics does a better job of determining which visits are "real," and which are by search engine bots or other automated (and therefore non-human) visits. Nowadays I just depend on Analytics. AWStats still runs, but that's mostly so I can pull the information from the database and have a direct comparison with historic data, because I've been using AWStats much longer than Analytics.

I use AWStats as a drill down to get more information if Analytics falls short. As pointed out Sepehr, Google Analytics relies on Javascript and also Cookies for tracking new versus repeat visitors. If cookies and privacy are a major concern for your visitors, the AWStats can be a solution to collect data without cookie and Javascript dependencies.

So, for purpose of clarity, is Analytics actually rendering the least possible traffic information?

Both are good tools to measure site's online activity though I still trust Google Analytics more than any other tools.. though the results is a bit delayed by several hours I think..

    Exactly!
AWStats will always be more accurate than Analytics. You can't compare those two.
Analytics is limited by the fact that it runs with javascript. Even the IE now has a blocking option with Tracking Protection Lists (TPL).
So there are many ways to not let Analytics know which sites you are visiting.

But Analytics has some nice features which let you forget about the accurancy ;)

Awstats will return a bunch of hits whether it be bots or scripts or potential hacks. You will likely see more traffic, but if you really look at it a lot of it is bogus. However, google analytics relies on javascript and some will automatically block it, myself included. So it is difficult to come to a perfect solution for tracking traffic. Check the two and compare stats to come up with a happy medium I guess. Awstats is a bit un-accurate, but analytics is too because of the java blocking.

What will happen if someone disables javascript. Will it be counted in analytics. I know that awstats will count them. But what about GA?
