In my experience, Dreamhost is one of the best hosts out there, if not the best. I'm using them to host all 12 of my sites and never had any problems with them. One thing that I look in a host, aside from the obvious is the good customers service and Dreamhost's is the best i have dealt with.

Go with godaddy for basic hosting. Do a search for promo codes on Google to get discounts.

If you're just looking for shared hosting then I'd go with HostMonster. They've been good for me.
