Hi, Just wondering how you guys would divide up the marketing spend of a new joke site I'm thinking of developing? Directories Text Links ????
a new script would be a start... but if you really want to spend $1000 on a joke site I would say go viral, and spend the $1000 on a viral marketing scheme (think youtube-esque) get some good permanent high PR links. content is king, and if its a joke site don't worry about PPC... although a sweet banner ad and some CPM will take you a long way, look into that!
i,d spend 700 on high pagerank one way links from directorys the other 300 dollars i would get people to build me loads of search engine friendly pages with unique content and targetting the keywords i want to use.
i will go with advertsing on diffrent site, banner, cpc etc.i will also hire some ppl who can post in forums,in their signatures etc.
Hookers and beer!!!!! It would provide you with some great orginal content based on your drunken endeavour(s) that you could write about.
$200 - Backlinks $200 - Multiple professional reviews of my site $200 - Upgrade graphics $200 - Add more features for users $200 - SEO consultation Nice and easy.
well I would spend all on ppc ads and tried to get some free links to the site (forums, blogs) and as much as possible
You should provide us more informations, i.e. do you include the site's development and graphics in your budget?
First off, forget about Google PR and building tonnes of crap backlinks. None of these things will get you *Traffic* which is what you ultimately want. Before you start anything, you need to make sure you have KICK-ASS content! Seriously, it should be super funny and you'll need a cool looking site, no turnkey crap with the $25 joke databases... make it *original*. -The Youtube suggestion was good. Come up with something FUNNY and plaster your URL all over it, make sure people see where it came from! -Get linked to from sites like Bored.com, CollegeHumor, CoolSiteOfTheDay and similar... other general joke site links would also be good so don't forget to do link exchanges with them all. -Go to your local highschools and college and give away free t-shirts and baseball caps, make sure they are super funny and borderline acceptable to wear in school. If they are so outragous that the faculty starts complaining you can be sure other kids will want to wear them! -Give away cool stuff on your site. Your cool-ass tees, music, MP3 players and the like. Give away lots of tees since they are good advertising, sell them really cheap also... don't give away too much of the other stuff because that is just a waste of money... you'll use that as bait. Don't waste your money on PPC or other adverts... they'll probably fail to get you the crowd you're looking for in the numbers your looking for. Try it if you want, you might get lucky but don't sink your entire budget into it. Viral is the ONLY way to make it go big, you need lots of eyeballs to see your site if you want it to spread. PS: Make it easy for visitors to tell their friends about your site. PPS: Make sure you have kick-ass content, it's important. Pete.
very good advice itsme indeed. I think buylinks is not a good idea for a joke site.Your target should be to get 80% non organic traffic. I think advertising in teen forums can be a good idea.
Ok, so you can get DOUBLE the content + a perk 1. original content to write about 2. viiiideoooooooo footage (oh.. now we are talking monetizing too. video for sell sell sell(content and perk++)) 3. sexually related perks++ hahaha it's a win/win/win
Thank you. Yes, teen forums can be a gold mine. The more users that add your site to their sigs, the better! Remember, Joke sites can spread like wildfire if you get it in front of enough young people fast enough. You might want to try some MySpace advertising... sending bulletins and what not. I don't have any experience with the myspace thing so I can't help you there. Pete.
make a contest for submitted jokes and let the visitor vote for the best joke, after 6 month the best submitted joke will get 1000 USD Cash. tell the people about your contest. Could go viral. just a thought.
1.) couple of jokes series or videos that could go viral within every e-mail (I would target topics like school or office work as these are the sectors where the people are most frustrated or bored and using computers at the same time); 2.) provide the jokes/funny sayings/videos platform for another webmasters. I mean adding an iframe code that will just send your newest content to another sites is a stable traffic-bringer. You should provide a structured content, I mean if there is a "home improvement" site and wants to have a section related to "home improvement humor", it should be your site which provides the content. Also for the butchers, custom officers and pizzaiolos. Don´t forget your laser targeted backlink incorporated in the package... You know what I mean, right...
