I just had 20 or so backlinks created but the anchor texts are irrelevant and useless. Would those links still give my site a boost in the rankings if: - searching for my site by its name, e.g "my site" ? - searching for my site using relevant keywords that are found on my site? Or have I stuffed this up because of the irrelevant anchor texts? (please note the URL in the links to my site is fine, just the anchor text for them is incorrect) Thanks
You'll still get credit for every backlink, but not having the anchor text correct (or way off from what it's supposed to be) is a big negative.
What i did was instead of using something people would actually search, I combined keywords together and set it as the anchor text, like this: "keyword 1, keyword 2 & keyword 3" But realistically people would search just "keyword 1" or just "keyword 2", but not "keyword 1, keyword 2 & keyword 3", which is what i set the anchor text to. So the keywords are actually in the anchor text, but they are together in a sentence that no one would ever search for. So would the keywords still count in that anchor text?
Well the anchor text is equally important for the keyword rankings, yes it would be better if they are targeted in few words rather than sentences. It is not like a major loss, however the value of your backlink would have had more additional advantage if it it is backed up with a proper anchor text.

if your not using proper keywords in your anchor text. although it would be effecient but not effective. the most important thing is that your site will not be listed against the specific keywords that relates to the nature of your site
