With new Google changes and trying to stay with reputable sites/links, what are the best links to go after - blogs, forums, social, directories, search engines?

Please opinionate with success (or failure) stories.

Well now, I guess the best way will start from your own unique content, which should obviously not be copied or spinned. Next, yes forums and blog commenting might be the ideal ones to target for. Social bookmarking has and will always be the best way for generating links, even if it is for a long run. After almost 6 months of rigorous submission of my articles in most of the bookmarking sites, I am getting more than 50% of my traffic from these sites. These sites also help to get quality and unique links for your site ;)
    Hope that helps !!!!!

yeah i agree and specially forum link are more useful as compared to blog commenting as blog commenting might be no follow while forums commenting is mostly do-follow

In my opinionyou should do a compination of the following: Directory submission, relative forum posting, yahoo answers posting, blog posting, social networking, press release, quality article submission, and last but by no means least, social networking.

Actually i Do not care to think what the best backlink is. I just make daily update post my blog and submit these post to social bookmarking. Thats it..

Additionally, I usually find high inner pagerank from relevant my blog.

One way, relevant, authoritative links are the best, I don't think anyone can deny that fact.

Forums will always stay on top, especially forums where only normal people will be on (not webmaster-robots like us :D). Google then knows that there is something valuable on that site and it isn't just posted for promotion. And of course, every link you post that is legal (forums, guest posts etc) is an extra one that might do the trick to get you on top.

I will have to look for topic-specific forums for my sites to see what i can find. I have not seen much return on social networkng for my sites (too dull) but article links and directory links seem to do well in the past. I will need to get more blog and forum work done.

Forum links are certainly NOT your best bet. The poster above saying Forum links are 'top' is obviously clueless.

There is a reason why forum SPAM and comment SPAM has been slowly targeted out by google, and this last update (thankfully) makes it harder for guys to make money who just SPAM comments and forums.

Those are not quality backlinks, its SPAMMY garbage.

blog commenting is sometimes better then forum backlinks. better one is blog creation. if you make a SEO friendly blog and make some backlinks for it, blog could be caught by google, it will give you not only the backlink but also some traffic.

seeing to your signature. i would advice to get web to directories and post in moneymaking forums, these backlinks would be relevant and most effective.
forget the socials, they are no-follow.

some people vote for relevant posts others for random spammy posts in order to generate a good backlink stock. Im new to this, but im guessing relevant back linking would act as target audience advertising were as spammy linking would be total junk main and post visits as a result will end up bouncing. So for my printing site swiftcolour i should aim for targeted links or settle for any old link? I would rather have valued views vs bouncers. or does this all just relate to getting those lovely google bots crawling over my site?

Youtube links are nofollow, but can be a great source for driving traffic if attached to a popular video...

I will not rate them by the type but the quality of the site
blogs, forums, social, directories, search engines and etc is same, backlink is backlink but how good the backlink is depend to the quality of the site.
