on an off topic note, i would have recommended you go with a co.uk domain, since your website is based in the UK, geographically speaking.
Have patience because SEO needs patience and do your work that are on page optimization and off page optimization.Then,later definitely you will get the result.

Your main goal must be to attract visitors and registered users. It will work better to start distribute any brochures to local business, instead of doing SEO. The more users you have the more popular will become your website.
how old is your website? what's the current position of the keyword that you are targeting? If you cannot get that keyword in Google's 1st page SERP, try optimizing for a long-tail version of your keyword at least you will generate some good traffic.
That keyphrase is very competitive timeframe to even get near first page is 8-12 months ... And you need to do things corectly ...
Just on a side note, you mentioned distributing brochures etc. to local businesses. Can I just say that in this day and age, local 'paper' based advertising is fading out. Think about it, how many people do you know what keep their Yellow Pages or most junk mail unless they seem something that catches their eye? Right now, online/search marketing is killing them off purely because this generated traffic is from users looking for your products/services - and doesn't waste your money on resources that just get thrown in the bin. Anyway - just my 2cents ;-)
