Does Wordpress Change like this?

Hi...I have 2 domains with webhosting. One is at Yahoo, and the other is at Godaddy. I am trying to install Wordpress on both to set-up two blogs. At Yahoo, I can easily direct the blog homepage to www.xyz.com. BUT at Godaddy, it only allows it to be like www.xyz/wordpress. When I go in to try and change the settings...an FTP error message comes up. What is going on...and why does it seem like they are two different versions of Wordpress...why would the Yahoo one be easier?

    thanks

This is very strange!!! I use godaddy and never had any problems with the. From what I understand you have two domains right, each with a hosting account?

What you have to do is upload the contents in the WP file to your root directory. It’s better to use a ftp program like filezilla. You’re getting www.domian. com/wordpress/ because your uploading the entire file to the root directory.

Okay I'll take a shot at explaining things at the very basic level for you canadian.

Currently on your godaddy hosting account you have a folder named 'Wordpress' but you don't want that folder on your hosting account, you want what's inside that folder.

So when you upload your wordpress files to your account don't upload the 'Wordpress' folder just upload the contents of that folder.

The problem is that GoDaddy has installed into a subdirectory called wordpress.

You could delete the version you have installed currently (assuming you haven't yet posted anything important. Then download Wordpress from http://wordpress.org/development/2006/07/wordpress-204/ and upload it via FTP to your root directory, is that's what you want, and do a fresh installation.

is there any webhost that does this automatically? like yahoo hosting?
it says in the yahoo hosting manual, that after you open wordpress, you just fill in than you want wordpress on your homepage (ie. www.xyz.com) do you think this would work?

You may have an option to do this at GoDaddy too but it would be done at the installation phase. It sounds like by default it gets installed in the /wordpress subdirectory. Try uninstalling and reinstalling - only this time watch the installation screens more carefully and see if there's an option to change from www.xyz.com/wordpress/ ro just www.xyz.com.

hi..thanks for helping. I'm starting to understand abit more. There is nothing during the installation screen, i was going into the "options" field and changing it there after it was already installed. so it won't work for me using Godaddy. But, Yahoo, clearly asks this question during installation...check this out, do you think it will work with Yahoo?

In step 2, you can decide if you want your blog to be your web site home page. To make your blog your home page, click the corresponding checkbox. If you'd prefer not to make your blog your home page, leave the checkbox unselected.

No, you won't be able to change it AFTER installation. You'd have to change it BEFORE Wordpress is installed.

That's why I suggested uninstalling and reinstalling.

Hi Canadian, Once you have logged into your Wordpress COntrol Panel on the site hosted in Godaddy ... Click on Options ... There you will see 2 options where you can set your domain URLs, now change both the options www.yourdomain.com and click on Save Changes!

Now login to your FTP and move all your files in the wordpress directory to your main directory! Your site should up and running on www.yourdomain.com after this!

I would do as suggested and uninstall wordpress. Then try installing it again and pay very close attention, looking for an option asking you if you want the blog to be your homepage, or what directory you want it in. always choose for it to be the homepage (or in the root directory, if they word it that way instead). Otherwise GoDaddy will make a blog folder for you and then you're stuck with it. (I personally have not used Go Daddy for this, but other hosts always leave you that option right in the first couple steps of installing WP)

Have you been able to install it yet? I know this sound stupid but go over to www.wordpress.org and read the installation instructions carefully, it is very easy to follow. Your other option would be to ask someone here to install it for you.

You should go for Hostgator.com ..You could even install wordpress (and many other things) with one click.
But I think it's very easy to install wordpress manually..
Probably this wordpress installation tutorial will help you.
Just let's know if you have further questions.

thanks for everyone help. Godaddy does not give me the option at the beginning installation to select where i want to host it...therefore, I think i'm going to go with Yahoo. Even though they charge $11 per month...the installation of Wordpress is very simple. Its very upsetting, because i have over 10 domains that i want to set up wordpress on!!

I think the best thing you could do is learn how to install it yourself. Trust me it isn’t very hard, give it a try.

I did several WP installations on several different hostings. It's simple. But you must know what is "FTP". From your postings it seems for me you don't understand the word "FTP". Note, if you can install WP by one click you may have many problems, like fixed subdirectory or folder, and on Netfirms.com SEO URL prohibited etc. So, teach "FTP".
