I've been listening to Domain Masters show on Webmasterradio.fm and, although it is a great show as far as web development in general is concerned, the whole point of "building a portfolio" of 500+ domains still eludes me.

Why do people hold so many, anyways? I understand importance of having a great name IF you are developing a site behind it. If you are not - what are you, just making money reselling those? Some type-in traffic sent to a parking space somewhere? I have no experience with this. Maybe someone in the domain business would like to fill in. I have a 20-odd domain names I've hold on to over the years and only 10 actually operating sites. What would be the best way to utilize the unused domains?

What else can be done with domains that general public has no idea about?

    Thanks for your input!

Domain collecting is basically a collection of real estate on the internet. Some people buy up names to save them in the hopes of selling them at a future date. Sometimes this can be very profitable. If you are lucky enough to get a good domain name such as i.e. Candy.com which was purchased sometime around 2003 for approx. $110,000....that site was parked with pay per click traffic as a simple content page. The site had paid for itself in the matter of about 2 years...yes through pay per click traffic...parked. Now this is not going to be the case in all domain collections. Some such as myself...develop sites on some of my pages and some I sell off for better than what I purchased them for. Sometimes very nicely....the right site, can be a gold mine...it is real estate on the net...Candy.com = Hacienda in the Bahamas....gotnocluewhattodo.com not that good.....wait a minute.....maybe?? Do you see...it comes down to if you owned AustinNights.com ....and a new night club came to town and wanted that name, How much do you think it would be worth to a profitable business such as that??----Hundreds..if not Thousands!! Once again, it depends on the name and there are also a couple other factors as well to take into consideration.....but these answers come with experience. Hope that helps you some....Good Luck.

Domainers basically make money with reselling or just park the domains and get ppc revenue.

I myself am a fan of registering unique names for the price of $8.00 -$10.00 and devloping forums on them and selling for like $200.00 each for instance I sold GamerVein.com today with forum for $200.00 $8.88 to make it. excluding the license.

I register good domain names and develop them one by one.

Then I do SEO for them, get them out of Google's Sandbox and watch the traffic come in and make me some money through Adsense, after they get PR I sell links on them and when they are huge sites with lots of traffic, I sell them and make profit.

Its pretty simple if you keep doing work on your sites every once in a while.

My Buddy actually made this List for another forum, a while back But its so true:)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
You might be a domainer if...

    1. When somebody on TV makes up a phrase you check to see if the .com is available.
    2. When you type in a URL and get a 404, you check the Whois.
    3. You own your own personal name as a .com.
    4. You own your own personal name as multiple extensions.
    5. You don't know what GOOG is trading at, but you know the highest reported domain sale of last week.
    6. You were involved in the highest reported domain sale of last week.
    7. You have more domains than friends.
    8. You purposely leave the .net available for registration so some sucker will develop it and indirectly send traffic to your .com of the same name.
    9. You register the .com as well as the .net, and then sell the .net without mentioning that you also own the .com, for reasons stated in #8.
    10. You have spent enough money on domains to buy a nice house. (Or two)

Ok, the next person has to start with #11, etc.:) :)

You might NOT be a domainer if...

    1. You own the best site ever.. well, wwwthe-best-sit3-ever.info
    2. You got the best site ever (see above) for only $25.
    3. You were talked into a development deal with the original owner of the best site ever (see above) and instead of $25, you got a deal for $35, that included a logo for wwwthe-best-sit3-ever.info
    4. You fell out of your chair when you saw that e.com was available.
    5. You called GoDaddy when you received an error telling you e.com could not be registered at this time.
    6. When asking somebody for their web address in person, you try to sound cool, and you ask them for the "Earl...."
    7. The first and second best domains you have ever purchased are the same name. Once for the reg fee, and once for the overpriced squatters fee when you forgot to renew.
    8. You own several typo domains.. but only because you fat fingered the keys when registering them.
    9. You try to sell wwwthe-best-sit3-ever.info for $99,999,999 on eBay.
    10. You actually go register wwwthe-best-sit3-ever.info and do the things mentioned in this thread with it...

Ha! Or when you see someone viewing a website on TV you run a whois... I did this for "shorttimeaway.co.uk" when I saw Sonia off Eastenders booking a holiday - it was a made up website of course as the BBC isn't allowed to advertise, so I reserved it and have done precisely nothing with it :D

With regards the poll, I do a variety of those things with my domains - some I reserve coz they're pretty neat names and I just sit on them, some I reserve with the sole intention of building a site on it, some I reserve purely to sell on straight away, etc etc etc

Nope, not even parked it - just haven't got round to it, it's been months now but I've been totally snowed under. I may well have missed out on a couple of dollars - damnit!! :(

Well, I can see where the sarcasm about couple bucks comes from:D , but wait until months will turn into years and then you'll be genuinely interested in making at least enough to keep renewing those domains year after year!

Yeah maybe, I just get so busy with other stuff that even the seemingly small tasks of parking domains get pushed to the bottom of my to-do list for week after week after week... so which site do you use to park your domains?
