I have some money to invest into advertising or manual directory submissions. I was just wondering which one I should do?

Buy some link building software and advertising (depending on your budget).

definitly not directory submission. however advertisement can be costly. instead you can write some articles about your site and submit them to article directories, create squidoo lenses, etc.

that depends. if you are selling something, i would suggest advertising; since that would bring the money back(hopefully) in to your pocket.

Don’t invest in directories, it can be useful to generate unique back links, but not for traffic, as said by “webcosmo” if you are selling anything on web, advertising can be helpful to you.

I forgot to mention i own a blog so I'm not selling anything. I'm trying to do some social media stuff, I'm only getting about 12-16 uniques a day with no advertisement.

Depends on how much money you got... You can use fiverr for the directory submission. That way you can do both. :)

go with ads and make sure they are specific to your content. No point in ads that are being shown to people not interested in your product or service.
    Targeted ads work best.

I would submit a few a articles, if you don't want to write them yourself then look in the Warriors For Hire section. Submitting to directories is also going to improve the number of visits as it will enhance your off-page optiomization. Generally people do not search through directories to find anything but once your entry has been indexed by Google your directory link will show up in the normal searches. These are long term options as it might take a bit of time before you see results but they are also permanent. Ads will get you quick results in the short term but are going to be an on-going expense.

Directory submissions are good for the long haul/SEO but if you are looking for results now you are going to better off advertising somehow, whether that is by forum/blog postings, PPC, buying ad space, buying direct traffic, etc.

You can use both. For directory submissions you can use http://www.imtalk.org/cmps_index.php?pageid=IMT-Directory-Submitter and for advertising, the single best ppc program that comes in my mind will be adwords.
Or you can also use facebook.

    Advertising is temporary traffic.
Search engine traffic is long term traffic.
Spend that money on SEO not on advertising.
