A while ago I was reading about a marketing campaign by a car company (I believe it was by Volkswagen) where they gave out a free car in the following manner. A car was digitally marked on a map. Anyone with an iPhone (perhaps other smartphones as well, I cannot remember) can claim this car. The person closest to this location who knew about the game would therefore claim it first with their phone. However, everyone who had the necessary app within a certain radius can see the location of the current claimer. If they get to within 100 feet or 100 meters of the current claimer, they can claim the car from that person. The person with the car at the end of 24 hours/48 hours/1 week (I forgot the timeframe) wins the car in real life. I know this took place in a European country (possibly France or Germany) but I cannot for my life find anything on this campaign. There was a video on it too and I believe my initial search that led to that video had to do with "guerrilla marketing". However, I cannot find any articles/videos/information on it at all right now. It is very frustrating to know so much about an event and not be able to find something about it. Therefore I am offering $20 to the first person to find a link or give a clue that will reveal this article/campaign for me. Please post your response in this thread and I will look in order of time. If you find me the direct video detailing the campaign, I will boost the bounty to $30 PS I believe the campaign is 1-3 years old.
You might be a bit off with the details... the only car campaign i know of that involves an iphone is this : http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/Ah...car-iphone-app-play-game-win/story?id=8889617 http://www.auto123.com/en/news/car-news/2010-volkswagen-gti-an-iphone-celebrity?artid=116116 and there was also one with apple and Volkswagen working on a iphone app.. http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._apple_talking_with_volkswagen_over_icar.html and their is also a BMW app too.. http://www.appleinsider.com/article...one_compatibility_with_handsfree_calling.html tnx
Hey sorry, I also came across the GTI app in my searches. That was not what I was looking for. Message me! I will repost it for you and you will get the money if it is the campaign I am looking for!
Volkswagen did something kind of similar when they were promoting their Fox automobile in South America by hiding festival tickets and as people Tweeted about the festival the map grew where the tickets were hidden... http://vimeo.com/19826810 Code (markup):
