I'm planning to purchase my friend's guitar. What all should i check before paying him? Please state some essential checklists before purchasing. I want to make sure that the guitar is in good condition. So people familiar with guitar can give some advise

NO! ;) That would cost me around $600-$650:rolleyes: I will be opting for a cheaper option, say around $150.brand: Gibson,Hobner etc (Semi electric) .I'm a beginner so wasting money on costly Guitar would be senseless

Please let me know how to check if a guitar in in good shape.I mean in good condition

Make sure you are getting a good deal... make sure it works.... scratches don't really matter imo, if you are getting a good deal and it sounds good.....

Size. My last guitar was just a shade smaller than the one I was replacing and it made a vast amount of difference. Maybe more relevant to accoustic than electric, but still my best input!

If you can play chords, test the fret buzz by playing out a bunch of chords on the guitar or just playing individual notes. If you hear any unusual buzzing or nasty clicking sounds, you might be in for a bad deal. Of course, you have to play the notes correctly - often buzz is caused by improper holding of the left hand.

Check the neck carefully to see if there are cracks where it joins the body. The neck must be perfectly straight and not warped or bent (very bad sign if it is). The strings should be close to the fretboard (guitar neck).

Shake the guitar and see if you hear any rattling sounds.

Good luck! Hope you get a good deal :) To be safe, check online retail prices of the model so that you don't get ripped off.

Strings are really no indicator, in all fairness the guitar probably needs re-stringing if it's an old one - then it'll be as good as new. Can't judge a guitar by a pair of old strings!

Check if the strings feel ok when you play. And make sure nothing is broken.

I would start with an acoustic, its much better to learn on and gets your hand in shape for starters. As some one above mentioned earlier check for fret buzz.

Also sit in a chair and put the body of the axe on your feet and look straight down the neck to see if its straight.(string side up of course lol)

If you are just learning it is sorta academic as long as it is not jacked up if you will. What is most important is tone. Everyone has a different what is called "attack" or how they beat on the guitar.

Especially with acoustics, sit down in a guitar shop and fiddle with a bunch of them until you find that one that "speaks to you"

My first acoustic was an original handmade Seagull before they plant burned down and Godin bought them out. I chose that over a much more expensive sunburst Gibson. 10 years later I have just about played a hole in it.

I still love it today but had it bought the Gibson it would be worth crazy amounts of cash lol...

As a rule of thumb, if it looks like it has been dragged behind a truck for a while, its likely broken in and reaps much better tonal quality.

hope that helps and will stop there or I will go on for hours. I used to play for a living before I had to grow up a tad(just a tad)

    Nigel
