Does DMOZ allow the editors to reveal their identity publicly?

Discussion in 'ODP / DMOZ' started by WallaceYeung, Mar 28, 2011.

How to prevent someone use the editor identity to have corrupt deals with others?
for example, i want my site to list on DMOZ UK category,
and then i know this guy (jimnoXXX) is responsible for exactly category,
i pay him for getting listing.
who know? how can we stop them? can we report to DMOZ?
what's the purpose they want to let other people know they are editors?

i found many listings on DMOZ is suck and low quality absolutely,
i have a question why my site can't list on DMOZ but they can?
it's absolutely an big issue here.

In my case, integrity and to add some authority to my posts about ODP here.

What purpose would be served by concealing my affiliation? That's the kind of thing that causes us to decline wannabe editors.

sorry for quote your name here, i mean nothing about you, it's just an example.
i submitted my directory for almost two years,
    get no response from DMOZ.
is it possible that DMOZ let me know that when my site was rejected and the reasons if possible.
i even DON'T KNOW whether my site has been review by someone.

If you have paid any editor for a listing then report the editor for abuse, if proven the editor will be booted. You can find a report abuse button at the top of every page.

I openly say that I am, like Jim Noble, an editor. I don't publish my editor name because Snooks, who used to post on here, and others have had telephone calls at home that they felt obliged to report to the Police. And yes I have had some emails and pm's asking me if I could help in the listing of their site, but I can assure you they were reminded that DMOZ is a directory that builds categories for end users and as such anyone can suggest a site for free, but it might take from a few days to a few years for a review for a possible listing and that anything that tries to shortcut that process is abuse and any editor taking payments is booted and any site offering payments can get banned for ever.

    edit to add
You will not be told if your site is sitting in the suggestions pool awaiting evaluation or if it has been rejected. If it meets our guidelines and you can check those at DMOZ, then when it is review ed it wil be listed, but see above for how long that can take. DMOZ does not notify if sites are accepted or rejected, because they are suggestions and may not come from the site owner, also it can generate a lot of heat if we were to say that sites were rejected. So you submit and forget, come back in a few months/years and check the listings, put your site into the search box on DMOZ (minus the www) and see if it is listed. But understand the comment above the reason for DMOZ to exist is to build categories for people who want to search using categorised data. We have NO interest in any value that a listing might give to a site, we do not just list top sites, sometimes poorly build amateur sites but they will have unique content.

If you think sites listed that y ou find do not match up to our criteria then please press the update button on the page and bring that to the attention of an editor who will judge if the site should or should not be listed.

as an editor, i hope you can judge and review submission impartially,
it's important that let's have the same opportunity to get list on dmoz.
btw, i submitted my site again until dmoz approve my site one day.

We are interested in building categories. There is no one editor of any category, in fact 200 or more editors can edit anywhere in the directory so a listed site that does not comply with our guidelines is likely to be removed and any editor finding a site that they want to list can list it. There is also a record with every site recording who has worked on that site and what that editor did. So if there is any need to check on who listed or delisted or rejected a site that is absolutely possible. There is even a record of my first edit that I did 10 years and 30, 000 edits ago. Add to that editors can and are removed if they are discovered to be doing abusive editing also that new editor s can be added, so that an editor does not have carte blanche to do anything they like. But you just saying someone was abusive on here is not proof, you need to fill in an abuse form and a senior editor, higher then me, will look at it.

    .Edit to add
Please do not re-submit, it is against the guidelines you said you had read w hen you suggested the site. It can disadvantage the site and can even be taken for spam and that goes in the can, permanently.

    Okay, thanks for your reminder.
do you think whether it's acceptable to resubmit it after 2 years?

Resubmitting does NOT help your site from being faster accepted. The reason you are 'pending' with your website is because there is maybe only one (or NONE!) editor(s) for the category.

Every site submitted WILL BE checked sooner or later.

As I said: are you sure there is an editor for your prefered category?

If yes then you just have to wait. The problem is most of the editors are inactive, and their account is being deleted after they haven't edited for 4 months anymore.

So the reason your site isn't submitted (yet?) is probably because there isn't any editor in your category...

You don't know for sure...and that's what makes it frustrating when you submit your site :)

I'm sorry, but trust me, I know the feeling! :D

I know people who had to wait for more then a year...

    So much disinformation :(.

We have around a million categories and around 6000 editors. It follows that most categories are edited by folks with permissions further up the tree. Also, don't forget that around 200 of us have global permissions letting us edit in any category we choose - and we do. I'm editing widely in New Zealand at the moment but you won't find it on my profile.

Deliberately suggesting a website to a category with a named editor doesn't speed things up, it slows them down because the suggestion will get moved from pillar to post until it gets to the correct destination, incurring a delay at each move. See How to get your site listed FOUR times faster!. It's an old thread but probably still correct.

If its the site in your signature, then it would probably have been rejected quickly as it is probably not listable (I not and editor, so I can tell you that). The 'bar to entry' for directory sites is very high. I checked your directories and there were a number of categories empty. Of what use is that to a user? Don't look for conspiracies.

    Do what?
    Volunteer?
    Suggest a site?
    Not send an email?
Waste people's time asking silly questions that don't tally with the post?
