Microsites vs 301 Permanents - Who is the winner?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Steven Kenway, Mar 25, 2011.

Ok, so I bought a bunch of great domain names that could support my keyword targeting SEO strategy.

Now should I build out microsites with keyword relevance that drive traffic to our main site or should I just 301 the domain names to our main site? Part b, do 301'd domains show up in SERP?

Thanks and let me know if you need further clarification.

Any thoughts folks? I would really appreciate some feedback from those of you who have tried both or haven't tried both for one reason or another.

    Thanks

I would recommend doing a 301 redirect. A 301 redirect keep most of your inbound links, it allows link juice to pass on to the website to which it is redirected.

Also 301 redirects tell the search engine that this website is permanently redirected to your new website. This helps for your rankings because it helps reduce the chances of having duplicate content.

And yes your website that is getting redirected could still show up as SERPs. As soon as user will click on the link that is given in SERPs, the user will be redireceted to the new website.

Do not go for the 301 redirect in any case . It will attract a penalty for sure . If you are wondering what I am referring to please do some reading on "Doorway pages" , "Hall way pages" "Cloaking" and you will get your answer . When you are using the 301 in your case you dont have a malicious intent but still the SE will treat it as the above 3 phrases which I have mentioned are classic black hat unethical techniques which will get all your sites banned .

I would suggest you carry on building pages on all the domains that you have taken (good strategy) and then give dofollow backlinks from those pages to your main site with a proper anchor text . Why do you need a 301 redirect for that ? What you are attempting to do is like putting 100 advertisements about 100 houses for sale and when the customers land on the address you have a notice board with a different houses address, asking please go to your main address instead . Hope you got the analogy ?

The people hate it and so does Google .

techlunatic is correct. We are aware that 301 used is to redirect link to its permanent page and not direct to trick google.

    Thanks for the responses everybody.

Techlunatic, I am not sure I understand the above quote. You mention a 301 backlink but there ask me why I would need a 301? Please expand.

Thanks in advance for all the comments. Very much appreciated. I am pretty surprised I can't find more info on microsites.

No ! you got confused with the technical terms . I didn't say a redirect in any way . What I said is -give dofollow backlinks . There is a hell lot of difference between a backlink and a redirect infact both are not even remotely related to each other . A backlink is just a hyperlink within the article that points to the site - its a link (got nothing to do with a redirect)
There is no such thing as a redirect backlink . There is a redirect and there is a backlink and both are different things . What I said was - avoid a redirect , use a backlink instead .
Does it make sense now ?

I think you should do some microsites, unless your other great domain names are truly much more likely to be manually typed or googled by your targeted audience.
