Blog Commenting - The Lost Art

Blog Commenting has been getting a bad rap for some time now and I think this is unfair. It is not the actual nature of the act itself (this makes it sound like a criminal offence) but the way it used.

We somehow seem to have lost the ability to talk or communicate with each other and as such are missing out on loads of opportunities to both grow our own communities but also to participate and help grow others.

Too often in the past we just hand these seemingly mundane marketing tasks to outworkers or a series of automated tools and then expect to see the maximum return from the minimal effort.

This may well have worked for a period but with Googles new Algorithm change I believe this is changing also. There have been a great many articles, ebooks etc written about Googles new change but I think the fundamental prime mover to this all is a drive the improve the quality of “the online stock”.

This I believe is no bad thing and one of the things that I really think is overlooked is responsible Blog Commenting. Gain too often this, as I said is handed down to outsourcers and utilities and as such degenerates into a morass of poorly written and composed Blog Spam without as much of a by or a leave in relation to the Blog we are attempting to comment upon.

I want to run through a series of video analyses where we can perhaps look at a number of live Blog Situations where we can perhaps “Think out of the Box” and generally see an improvement in our Blog Commenting. The positive upside of this is that better quality Blog Comments stand more of a chance of getting published and such the commentator stands more of a chance of getting a good link.

Lets kick this topic off with the following video that we put together recently whereby we analyse a Blog Url that has a Page Rank of 3 and we run through what we believe should be the correct way to approach this Blog.

Let me sum up by stating here and now that this topic is not about the mindless and seemingly endless spamming of Blogs but how to use this type of marketing medium properly. Let’s all get our hands dirty here folks and contribute and see if we can’t try and raise the bar somewhat here.

In future posts we plan to take a look at different Blogs on different domain suffixes where technically the rationale behind the Blogs either is or was originally different and how best to approach these. In some cases these Blogs either contain potentially awkward or uncomfortable subject matter but this shouldn't be an issue for those wishing to contribute responsibly and helping to "add something to the food chain".

I am new on digitalpoint and this is my first post.

It is very difficult to find out how many blog comments you can do each day. Is there a maximum number of links you can have each day. I wanted to start linking in a natural way as I don't want to be penalized by Google. Are there any general rules.

If you are in the business of creating quality dialogue and comments then technically the only limit should be your time. Ask any salesman what they really could do with more of and and the answer by and large will be thats either Sales Leads they can convert or more people that they can "have the conversation with" about potential sales.

Consider your Blog Commenting to fall into the latter category but by making informed comments not only are you impressing upon the Blog Owner what a knowledgeable and personable person you are but also by getting their tacit support on board you are also impressing another constituancy out there and that is the readers of the Blog.

Go for it and try to relate to and impress as many leads / Blogs as you can find.

Only way to get the maximum result for blog commenting is to build quality to response and contribute to the article. I agree that making a good impression is a good way to build relationship and more leads to your site.

Still very useful and don't let anyone tell you anything else as all the dofollow attribute says is don't pass on any accrued Page Rank benefit and thats all. Everything else is still the same so go for it.

Anyone ever heard that Google doesn't care that much about comment links nowadays ? You're better off by investing your time into website speed rather then comment links .

To be honest it doesn't make any difference as I said the nofollow attribute was all about telling Googlebot not to pass on PR juice and thats all nothing else. It was an attempt (among others) to try and stop webmasters constantly trying to game the system and make financial gain out of it. They've now achieved that by downgrading the importance of Page Rank entirely and it will soon be consigned to history totally.

This means that in effect a link on a nofollow blog for the rest of the reasons required such as indexing back link power etc is just as good as before.

Hmnnn so if they don't care about ,li nks how do you suppose they like to find out where sites are....other than by tracing links. I think you have something in the importance of the download and rendering speed of the site. That much is fairly obvious if you think about it as the quicker Googlebot can read a page then the more pages it can do in any one time with minimum resource used so that has to be good but as to whether download speed is better than links I think thats another cool myth.

To achieve maximum result through blog commenting, one has to take active part in response and contribute valuable information to an article when it comes to replying.

Exactly, contribute wisely and sensibly to "the Food Chain" and you'll get good links as well.

What a blog comment values for you if the blog owner edits for his favor only and removes your link? :)

For me, blog commenting is waste of time.

I think the key part of your statement here is in bold. It is your opinion and that has to be respected, that however does not make it a fact. Studies have proved quite conclusivly otherwise and not only that but quite a few studies have also proved that the "nofollow" attribute doesn't work the way it should anyway and quite a dfew respected marketers out there in tests have managed to rank blogs and sites for keyphrases using only nofollow comments.

The other thing that most folks are missing is that commenting responsibly on other peoples blogs does add to the quality of the blog itself. It shows that:

    1. People do take the time and trouble to read what is going on
    2. Feel motivated by it enough to want to comment upon the copy even if only for the purpoose of generating a back link.

The number of Blog Owners I speak to in the course of dealings with our membership site Simple Leveraging who quite happily allow comments as long as they are of good quality. As One pointed out "why shouldn't I? They are writing my blog for me and I don't need to pay them. They provide fresh interesting views on my articles and it means that every time Googlebot comes calling that there is fresh content on my blog to make them want to keep re indexing it"

Looked at this way, it's a bit of a no brainer really?
