And how do you propose a system to rank sites based just on content?

    Nope Fuji Xerox.

I figured. I should have asked straight up if you are questioning my honesty.

Agree, it's not exactly a difficult serach term, and with 492 links it wouldn't be hard to hit that search term at all.

When we look at a competitive term we can see the correlation between rankings and the number of links and anchor text.

    Take 'search engine' for example,

Site Position in SERPS/allinanchor:search engine ranking

    1 / 54
    2 / 2
    3 / 6
    4 / 4
    5 / 3
    6 / 5
    7 / 7
    8 / 136
    9 / 8
    10 / 10

I'd argue that the other factors that cause the sites with less anchor text to rank better are down to things such as the 'quality' and 'relevancy' of their links and the trustrank of the domain.

We can see Google ranking at #1 without even mentioning the search term on the page.

Sure - please don't for a moment think that I was holding it up as a fantastic achievement or something that I was showing off about, I was purely using it as an example to back up my debate - which is that you can rank well without backlinks.

Are you serious? 492 links??? I have never solicited a single one. Where did you get the figure? (I know there are some, but not using the anchor text, which is kinda what I was referring too).

I would certainly agree that is part ot it.

Not sure what you are referring to here.

I wasn't having a dig or anything, it's just with a relatively small number of sites ranking for a specific keyword it's easy for you to get a distored picture of what's actually causing a site to rank. I'm guessing in your case it's the quality of the links more than anything else. DMOZ listed etc

Here you go, more than 400 links ;)

Many of your backlins do include the term 'copier' there's lots of anchor text like - Fuji Xerox: Copiers, Printers, Faxes, Software, Document Solutions

Google ranks #1 in Google for the search term 'Search Engine' Google doesn't include the text 'Search Engine' anywhere on it's page, not even in the title tag.

It's my understanding that Google considers singulars and plurals as seperate entities...

Personally, I'm more partial to my new Top 10 SEO Tips: http://www.top10seotips.com. I was a little more discrete about the value of linking and may actually add a page specifically dedicated to the "Link War" we're living in.

I have to prove myself to the Googlebot first however.

    Check MSN

    Check Yahoo!

You had some good ideas and I think we can all appreciate the insight.

Backlinks with anchor text are most important part for SERPs.

I am very bad at onpage SEO, and all my ranks come from anchor in baklinks.
