Probably the simplest way is by using virtualdub. Search for it on YouTube or read the documentation on its website - virtualdub.org
You may try this Video Editor, it's a nice video editing software that can help you edit, join, split, trim, crop, convert and cut video, my friends recommend it to me, it's easy to use and works pretty well for me, it embeds many special effects. Simply use movie maker tool which you found on windows start menu button , Its free and so easy to use it.
Windows media maker is functional but basic, you may have RAM problems on a PC if it's a big movie. Imovie is far better, if you have a mac.

Video editing is very interesting and risky jobs,Because in these types of jobs any events are performed on pixel and color resolutions.
There's tons of guides on Youtube. I'd recommend starting with Windows Movie Maker, then slowly progressing to other programs such as Sony Vegas or Edius.
Agree with most of the posts above. Youtube is essential, scan around Google for your favourite video editor. If you are on mac use iMovie and if your are on Windows use Windows Movie Maker. Of course they are the simplest forms of video editors!
The best simple video editing is imovie, the only problem ( for some people ) is that it only works on mac.
For professional work After Effects is the software to go, it's expensive, but you can create magic with it. If you want something simple & easy then go with Windows Movie Maker.
