Probably the simplest way is by using virtualdub. Search for it on YouTube or read the documentation on its website - virtualdub.org

You may try this Video Editor, it's a nice video editing software that can help you edit, join, split, trim, crop, convert and cut video, my friends recommend it to me, it's easy to use and works pretty well for me, it embeds many special effects. I had made a video with it and the video got award, that's pretty cool. There is
    the free download link.
Hope it helps. Contact me if you have any other question.

If you are on PC, try Windows Movie Maker; or iMovie if you are on Mac.

Windows media maker is functional but basic, you may have RAM problems on a PC if it's a big movie. Imovie is far better, if you have a mac.

I'd like to recommend HD video editor to you, I always use it to edit video and make funny video for uploading to Youtube, it's easy to use and the quality is awesome, you can crop, cut, join, edit video with it easily. It also embeds many special effects, you can even add text to video or add background music, that's pretty cool. It worth a try.

There's tons of guides on Youtube. I'd recommend starting with Windows Movie Maker, then slowly progressing to other programs such as Sony Vegas or Edius.

Agree with most of the posts above. Youtube is essential, scan around Google for your favourite video editor. If you are on mac use iMovie and if your are on Windows use Windows Movie Maker. Of course they are the simplest forms of video editors!

The best simple video editing is imovie, the only problem ( for some people ) is that it only works on mac.

For professional work After Effects is the software to go, it's expensive, but you can create magic with it.
If you want something simple & easy then go with Windows Movie Maker.
