A link farm is a site that has no purpose other than to grow more and more links. Link cultivation, hence the term farm. Nothing but links. Check the site to see if it has real content. If there is no real content, and the OBL count is extremely high then you have a link farm.
Google have recently got much better at tracking down such link farms, although there are still lots of people out there who know how to hide their tracks.
A website with no original contents, huge number of links, no purpose but only links and links. Even some of them contains Page rank, most of the page ranks are fake. These sites are built only for link exchange. Always check the Page rank, contents and OBL of a website before involving in a link exchange.
Given all the information above I imagine it would be extremely easy to spot a "link farm" if you were to stumble upon. My advice (already provided by other) would be to avoid these.

Some sites are develop for the sole purpose of increasing the link popularity of the site through link exchange . Google consider those site to be spam. Generally all search engines remove link farms from their directories when they find the site to be spam.Infact many sites get penalize by other sites that link to them. It is not a good idea to link to a link farm if you rely at all on organic search for pageviews.
