Google duplicate content penalty... any software to check my site?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by achod, Mar 11, 2011.

I hear Google is putting more of an emphasis on duplicate content. I have an online store and some of the product descriptions are copied from the manufacturers description found on their website. Is there any software I can use to check all the internal pages of my site to ensure it is unique content?

Dude, you will be fine. Duplicate content penalties are still myths. The only time you will be penalized is having duplicate content among pages on your website itself.

No not really, I have already proved this is a myth on my own sites. Duplicate content is referring to duplicate content on your own website. Otherwise news sites would all be penalized because of syndicated content. Autoblogs are gaining traffic since the algo change, case studies have been done with that as well.

Old news that clearly disapproves of duplicate content across domains: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2006/12/deftly-dealing-with-duplicate-content.html

New news that declares duplicate content will be de-indexed: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/01/google-search-and-search-engine-spam.html

You might want to start following a few tech sites on twitter so you can keep up with relevant changes that address this kind of stuff.

Well you can also check the duplicate content by copying 2-3 lines and check such content in google. If google will show you the content in other site means you content had been duplicated.

Yep, that is the easiest method to check for duplicate content. Copy the first sentence into Google and check where it's indexed.

You guys bothering read OP's question before you posting? He asked how to check duplicate contents on his website? One by one checked on Google is not a good idea.

There is this brand new software called DCFinder at dcfinder.com that will do the job for you.

I always smile when I read that duplicate content problems are a myth. If tehy were - why would Google and other search engines invent the Canonical URL tag, write instructions in their guide lines how to avoid duplicate content etc?

    Have a great day!

I honestly think it's too soon for people to know all of the effects of the last update, either way if you generate new content protect it thoroughly. If someone else is using it send C&D's, notify their hosts if applicable, notify Google.

I personally think that dupe pages are thrown into the supplemental index and just won't rank as well as they used to, even though we all believed they shouldn't have ranked before.

Buddy, I have tested this out... I have about 40 clients. Duplicate content is just about ON PAGE. Duplicate title tags, duplicate articles, etc.

I have done case studies, and if you guys want to argue about this, then explain to me why auto blogs are having success! That is all duplicate content...

What about news sites? Are you telling me that their syndicated and duplicate content is going to be deindexed? Uh oh.... better tell google news they're going to have to shut down since all of it is duplicate content.

Like I said, ON PAGE OPTIMIZATION. Off page, it all is a myth. Otherwise article marketing would truly be dead, press releases wouldn't work, backlinks wouldn't be counted LMAO. This has to be a joke. I feel sorry if any of you actual clients you do SEO work for.

Thanks for all the answers people. copyscape isnt really any good for me. I dont want to have to go through all 600 pages of my site on copyscape. So some sort of site wide test is what I need.

Thanks for your answer Ciaps, Has anyone else used dcfinder?? is it any good??

The duplicate content you referring to when you mention canonical url tags is mainly a problem for blogs. The same page's content can be shown in several ways, by category, by tag by post etc.

Scraping content from other websites and to publish it as your own content on your site will be penalized.

Other than that, there is lots of duplicate content on the web, especially on eCommerce sites. Sharing the same product descriptions or product names they receive from the manufacturer/supplier is just naturally.

As per Google, this kind of duplicate content will not be penalized.
For eCommerce sites it is almost impossible to rewrite all product descriptions, otherwise someone really would have to invest a lot of money and time (and time is money!) to really rewrite any single product description with their own wordings.
We carry only about 2500 products and I really wouldn't wanna rewrite each description plus the descriptions for all the new added products each month. Now imagine big stores like target, csn, home depot etc....

    copyscape.com

You can also write the content in Google search & find that whether the content that you have posted is present or not in Google.

If it is a myth, then how could my friend get his 40 auto blogs indexes and page ranks slapped from google. Google rules! Duplicate contents penalties are no myths.
