If you do a google search you'll find lots of good advice, or just browse these forums. Honestly, that's a huge topic and I don't think anyone could give a really good answer in a single forum post.

It also depends what your website is about. Different sites are best promoted in different ways. Rather than using generic ways to promote your site, it's best to network with key people in your area, and connect with online communities specifically oriented towards your site's topic and closely related topics. How about sharing it here? For one, you could add it to your signature on this forum! That's a quick and easy way of letting people on this forum know about it.

one option is to participate on different related communities without spamming.

establish yourself as an authority, and people would pay attention to your sig links.

What sort of social network site? If it's the generic type then don't bother, cut your losses now.

Article marketing, press releases, blogs, communities, get some press and you can increase traffic.

I suggest hiring a brand manager and marketing expert if you want to make some money with it.

Social bookmarking sites are also an option when trying to get the word about your site. StumbleUpon being the biggest site.

    Hi,

I would suggest search for niche based forums and participate actively in current discussions or you can create your own post. Then you can move to Article Writing and spin them and start making blogs.

it depends what your niche is. YOu can do a google search of "niche + forums", or maybe you can try using craigslist to promote.

Put a link in your signature here, I bet half the people reading this thread would go look at it to give you more ideas. But in addition to that try article marketing it works great.

    Search Engine Strategies

Perhaps the most important -- and inexpensive -- strategy is to rank high for your preferred keywords on the main search engines in "organic" or "natural" searches (as opposed to paid ads). Search engines send robot "spiders" to index the content of your webpage, so let's begin with steps to prepare your webpages for optimal indexing. The idea here is not to trick the search engines, but to leave them abundant clues as to what your webpage is about. This approach is called "search engine optimization," abbreviated as SEO.

    1. Write a Keyword-Rich Page Title. Write a descriptive title for each page -- rich in keywords you want people to find you with -- using 5 to 8 words. Remove as many "filler" words from the title (such as "the," "and," etc.) as possible, while still making it readable. This page title will appear hyperlinked on the search engines when your page is found. Entice searchers to click on the title by making it a bit provocative. Place this at the top of the webpage between the <HEAD></HEAD> tags, in this format: <TITLE>Web Marketing Checklist -- 37 Ways to Promote Your Website</TITLE>. (It also shows on the blue bar at the top of your web browser.)

If your site is aimed at teenagers and you give a bit of information- i.e. your not spamming post it in teen life on JCommunity at jobs4teens.co.nz. Only sites aimed at TEENAGERS and please expain a bit about them and why NZ teens may want to use them.

Article directories like EzineArticles, GoArticles, and many many more.

Simply write articles related to your niche and submit them to article directories with your website address in the resource box.

It will not only drive traffic to your website, but also build authority backlinks to your website which is helpful to your search rankings.

I think this is a very valid and important piece of advice. People will most likely pay attention to your posts and sigs if you are a "presense" in the community you are promoting in.
