yaman, please read my previous posts from 2006-2008. I've published on this topic quite a bit over the years, and as a refresher, will summarize main regulations below:

    1. Current Regulations. Currently, new EDU registrations are reserved only for institutions accredited by agencies on the US Department of Education list. Legally there is no geographical restriction for new EDUs, and a number of foreign universities accredited by US accrediting agencies have .EDU (e.g. www.london.edu - London Business School).

    2. Grandfathered Clause. Prior to 2001, EDU domains were managed by NetworkSolutions, which had somewhat different rules than the current registrar. As a result, when the US Department of Commerce transferred the administration to Educause, they stipulated a grandfathered clause. The grandfathered clause states that any EDU registered prior to 2001 does not need to meet accreditation requirements and other post-2001 stipulations (such as the 1 name per school restriction).

As a result, there are many non-university organizations that own EDU, including high schools, museums, associations, and for-profit corporations.

    3. EDU Deals. EDU domains may not be bought or sold directly, only via ownership transfer of the registrant. Hence, all edu sales on paper are structured as the acquisition of the school + its domain. This really doesn't affect anything, but people should be aware of this regulation. This is why the header states "School for Sale".

PM me if you have any questions.

KyserSoze, thanks for your kind words. I've been trying to set the record straight for EDUs for many years as there are quite a few myths about the regulations of this gTLD.

Bushramen, because of dollar value ($xx,xxx) transactions of this type typically go through escrow services.

It's an actual grandfathered .edu (NOT .edu.xx). Thanks for the question!

no way! It's not .edu ... it's edu.pl or other ext. its not a direct domain. I've seen this done and you can get it for way less than he offers. He can't show you the link because he don't have .edu bottom line.

Here's what I'm talking about and someone is selling subs for $3 - www.edudomain.edu.pl

No, it's legit, he's selling a real ".edu" for someone else. Technically you can't sell a ".edu" so he has to sell the whole "school", even if there's no real school if you get my drift. I saw the domain and it's a true ".edu"

DeluxeNames and ninanu1220, thanks for your good references. As I wrote before, it's an actual grandfathered .edu (NOT .edu.xx).

No, this is not an operational institution - just an entity, which owns EDU doman.
