Are backlink and quality content only things to consider when it comes to get high page rank?

Yes, try to keep the meta description and meta keyword for each page unique to that page only. Make sure the description and keywords are used in the content on those pages.

The best way I have found to get relevant backlinks is to find blogs that are relevant to your niche and offer to post good unique content on there blog as a "guest post". You can also purchase one-way backlinks from these sites but I would recommend the link within the "guest post".

For the most part, yes. Google PR is not as important as it used to be in my personal opinion. But to get your PageRank up make sure you focus on the most relevant links you can get, whether it be one-way backlinks or what I like to call "in content" backlinks. It also helps tremendously to constantly update your site with fresh content. Google will give you authority if it constantly sees unique content being added daily or weekly.

You can view Google's official post on the algorithm changes here: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/finding-more-high-quality-sites-in.html

Quality content that has a lot of backlinks(of quality) usually helps you get a high PR - but having a high, or low PR these days doesn't really matter. It's more about "popularity" these days over anything.

@John Munch: The best way I have found to get relevant backlinks is by doing guest posts with authoritative sites in your niche. You can find these by searching in google for your targeted keywords. You can try different search queries to find blogs/forums/etc in your niche.

Do a google search something like this:
    inurl:/blog/ + "dog training"
    inurl:/forum/ + "dog training"
    intitle:dog training inurl:/blog/
    etc.

Write a quality article and send the owner of these blogs/forums an email and ask if they would allow you to do a guest post. When contacting these blog/forum/site owners, BE PERSONABLE! This should be common sense, but you would be surprised how many people just send automated emails asking for links and then wonder why they got no responses.

@puddleofmud: It's very hard for me to say how long it will take you to get that many backlinks - because I don't really know about your niche.

To rank for "kitchen ideas", I would write relevant articles about kitchen ideas. I would then purchase/get guest posts on blogs/authoritative sites in your niche and link back to your internal "kitchen ideas" page.

The mistake most people make when backlinking their site is they focus on getting links to www.domain.com instead of spreading your links out across your domain (this looks much more organic).

@cyssoo: Depends what you mean by "niche keywords"? If you have chosen a niche, the next thing you want to focus on is finding BUYER keywords. I really can't help you 'find a niche', but I can give you some advice that will save you a lot of time. This also goes for just about anyone doing internet marketing.

*Stop wasting time trying to find that special/secret niche. Don't do what I did, I spent 5 years trying to promote different niches because everyone else was. The problem was, I knew absolutely nothing about the niches I was promoting. You may think that outsourcing content to someone on DP for 4$ an article is a good idea, but in reality - people who are searching for info in your niche, actually know the niche. So when they read your content, they are going to know that YOU and your writer know absolutely nothing about the niche - unless you have an excellent writer.

*Stick to what you know. What are your hobbies? What are your talents? Do you know how to do a 360 with a snowboard? Do you like to workout? What do you like to do?

Ask yourself these questions. You will find the niche you should of been promoting all along. :)

Once you have found your niche, the next thing is to find buyer keywords. This is not as difficult as you might think. You can almost bet that you are not the first person to target the niche. The first thing you need to do is go to Google and type in your niches main keyword. Find your competitors and make a list. Go on over to SEMRush (Link in my signature) and input your competitors domain names. You will now receive a list of keywords that they rank for. If they have have been around for a while, they are probably targeting the BUYER keywords. Grab their list of keywords and go over to Google Adwords Keyword Tool and input these keywords. Make sure after the keyword search that you select [Exact] and un select broad.

You can export these keywords from google and start writing articles to target these keywords.

I could go on and on, but I think you get the point - if not, feel free to ask away :)

@TheMissingLink007: What do you mean by your keyword is low at 200k? Are you doing blog/forum comments on relevant sites? Make sure that the content on your site is quality and 100% unique.

Great information and tips. Would these work for an ecommerce site as well? Should ecommerce sites focus on internal linking, external, etc? Any help will be great!
