What is the keyword density in an article?

I would like to know what is the keyword density in an article which contains 500 words. I heard that the keywords have to appear 2% to 3% for to get rank in search engines and to get good amount of traffic. Is it true? If it is, for the keyword "health products", in 500 words article it has to appear 10 to 15 times. Please clarify the same.

    Hello,

When I am constructing an article, I shoot for my main keyword once every 50th word. So for a 500 word article your keyword would be mentioned atleast 10 times. And make sure that it is mentioned in the first 50 words, not including the title. If you follow this rule of thumb you will pass Ezine Articles keyword rule. Hope this helps.

Previously I would have agreed you should keep it around 2% also with LSI keywords, but I think that 2% number is more the default percentage that ezinearticles automatically rejects your article. In a lot of cases even with an exact match domain Google's keyword tool doesn't even recognize it as being the most relevant keyword on the page (or even close).

Do a search for "tinnitus miracle", here's the stats:

    tinnitusmiraclev.com

    Title 2 11 36.4%
    Body 66 1841 7.2%
    H1/H2/H3 23 197 23.4%
    Links 18 86 41.9%

Previously I would think that it would get me in trouble for keyword spamming. But if you enter this url into Google's tool "tinnitus miracle" shows up as being the most relevant.

It's no wonder that some Adsense payouts are almost obscenely low on some pages, the keyword you're targeting isn't considered the most relevant by Google. JMO

BTW if you use the Firefox browser download and install the SearchStatus (Quirk) addon, and right click on the icon to check the keyword density.

    Hey Bob25,

Good point. You are probably right with regards to Ezine, I just use the same guidelines with Ezine as with the rest of my article campaigns. And thanks for the firefox suggestion, I will definitely look into SearchStatus.

If you didn't know about Firefox you may also want to check out several other addons, seoquake and rankchecker. I have other paid tools that do this, but sometimes it's faster in your browser, and it's free :)

Thanks for your valuable reply Zolt. If we mentioned a targeted keyword for 500 word article for 10-15 times, does it not consider as a keyword spam and gets low traffic? I am using the same thing for my article of 500 words for 15times keyword mentioned in the article. Now I feel does it related to keyword spamming? Or it is ok for SEO. Please clarify. So that I will forward with my further articles in future.

Thanks for your valuable suggestion Bob. I would like to show you one article which I posted on hubpages with the keyword Apple Computers, Apple Computers Store. The article contains 540 words. And I mentioned the keyword Apple Computers for 16 times in the article. Does it seems to be good or it will considered as keyword spamming. If it is, then what I have to really follow for to get the traffic. My article source is http://hubpages.com/hub/Apple-Computers. Would be looking for your helpful suggestions.

It was a good idea testing it out in hubpages before diving in, but since the Google "Farmers update" during the last week hubpages among others have dropped in the rankings.

The keyword "apple computer store" doesn't seem to have enough searches to pursue, but "apple computer" has a better amount of searches, but you are going up against Apple.com.

The keyword density for "apple computer" is showing at 4%, but the tags (BTW that's how I'd do it with lots of tags) kinda skew the percentages. However, it doesn't seem outrageous to me now :) In fact it's much lower than the example. Google's tool doesn't return your keyword as the most relevant, but maybe that it's a hubpage has something to do with it. You might consider adding H2 and H3 tag as that'll emphasize the keyword more, and maybe bolding, italicizing, etc. your keyword. But check if hubpages frowns on that or not (the bolding they might).

As for how it looks in MarketSamurai's seo checker the onpage seo for the top ten listings (competition numbers don't matter) most of the sites aren't optimized well. But onpage optimization won't produce magic. The offpage optimization looks bleak (mostly all red).

As for traffic I'm not real familiar with hubpages, but you do get traffic internally from "hubber's", using lots of tags is good. And I see other people linking their other hubs together.

Somethings I like about the hubs is that you can test out a niche before diving in without having to create an entire website. I put up a few pages, but never really got into it or followed up on those pages. But some people generate decent traffic even though thay aren't ranking.

Thanks for your brief information bob about the Keyword SEO in an article. I will follow what you said. But I didn't get exactly. Does it ok to mention that much times of keyword in the article? Even it doesn't gets traffic for now, may be it will get at after some time. I am just testing it on hubpages. If it is ok to mention for the 3% of keyword density in the article, then I will start my working in my website. Kindly confirm.

For keyword apple computer store the searches are 2400 and cpc is $13 and for keyword Apple Computers there are 60,500 and cpc is $8. So I used to mention the keyword for 3% in the article.

Using 6-10 keywords for a 500 words article worked for me very well. But ensure that your H1 and H2 tags has those keywords and also if at all you have images don't forget to use keywords in the alt text.

3% is not to high IMO, in fact if you can use the H2,H3 tags it'll probably be higher. The only place I know that it'll be a problem is at ezinearticles. Other people will suggest around 2% which is what I would've thought as well previously, but now like I said I think it's a bit higher. And in the example above obviously 7% isn't considered keyword spamming by Google.

As for the search numbers and CPC are you using "Exact" match and "U.S." searches, my numbers are a bit different?

apple computer store 1000 CPC $8.27
    apple computers 40,500 CPC $1.68

I normally target one primary keyword per page and one or two secondary keywords. If you can work the keywords into the H1, H2, etc. tags then it might be worth a try. When researching keywords if there enough searches for the keyword I'll create a separate page for it. For secondary keywords I use search terms that I can fit into the article/page without sounding unnatural, that have enough searches, but not enough to build a page for. Of course if I start to get a lot of searches for that secondary keyword term I can always build a separate page for it later on. But that's just me :) If you already have the page up then I'd try to use the varying keywords as anchor text when backlinking.

Count all the words in the article, (You can use MS Word for this) and then again count all the time you have used the keyword in the article (again use MS word for this). Divide the 2 and multiply the result by 100. The answer should be in the range of 3-5 not more not less.
