Nobody builds backlinks for you - you do it on your own.

I agree - cheap tools and service providers won't build your backlinks for you. But if you do it right - your customers will. You just need to inspire them to, and have content that's good enough to make them want to.

Have good content on your site, that is the best way to build top quality backlinks, and then manually do some yourself by posting on forums, blogs etc

Exactly...manual is the best way. Follow the off page SEO techniques and spread out towards all the dofollow relevant sites.

I agree. Manually way is the best. You want quality backlinks not quality. I've seen sites with 11,000 backlinks have a lower page rank than a site with 2,000 quality backlinks.

Well you should know at least some sites due to your work in the niche. Otherwise, just Google and find relative sites. Do some digging. Unless it's a very very niche area it shouldn't be too difficult - and if it is that niche you shouldn't have to do much link building anyway!

I agree with Mike, if you have a niche market link building is easy. Just use the quality links from quality directories.

Is it ever worth using the auto back link building programs? You all seem very sceptical.

It all depends on if you want quality or quality. Auto link building programs will do whatever and mostly post on spam sites. Which could list you as a spam site in the eyes of Google.

All the time. The last update was to get rid of most spam farming sites. The more spam that is pointing to your site the more your site starts looking like spam.

Yahoo answers has been put on a spamlist with the last google farmer update. Posting on forums is fine as long as its dofollow, but it does not help you as much. Best way is having quality sites such as friends websites, .edu sites, submitting blogs entrys to blogs. Find a blog that is in your industry and write for them. Youtube videos are very good now!

Submitting to good quality directories as well. Such as Dmoz, yahoo directory, etc.
