I have used various free places to check backlinks but they all say different things so I want to know if there is a way to do it without buying software that is accurate?

I like info provided by tools such as domain-pop.com in addition to marketleap and search engine results.

    Example:

    eWebPages Web Directory

    PageRank Links
    PR 0: 325
    PR 1: 30
    PR 2: 63
    PR 3: 394
    PR 4: 448
    PR 5: 102
    PR 6: 38
    PR 7: 2
    PR 8: 1

    Indexed Links
    Google 484
    Yahoo 24800
    Msn 9193

It's best to ignore the PR8 links it reports, it's usually non-existant

I just tried marketleap and they dont seem to match with the actual results on Google and other search engines.

I usually use LPC (Link Popularity Check) to see the latest links to a site. Its free to download and install.

Thanks to all who responded but only one of you answered my question. I was not looking for directories to submit to but to find an accurate link popularity checker. The only one recommended as far as I could tell from the post was the one at http://www.domain-pop.com/results.php. I found it to be very good. Anymore thoughts on this would be appreciated.
If it means anything I only use html on my site at this point.

A good free tool I use is http://www.uptimebot.com/ - shows inbound link numbers from all the major engines.
