Selling links and banners on their homepage, what makes it different than any other site?

How would anyone know if his bid is a winning bid ??

If thats not clear - i dont see how one can increase his bid in case he wants to advertise anyways !!

It's not going to be cheap at all, but it would be nice to help boost your own ranking on your domain.

I remember reading that phpbb sold links a long time ago and google devalued all links from the site.

Would this till be true ? Can anyone find that article ?

I have heard the same thing, all though 'devalued' wasn't the word. Rather 'disregarded' was. It wasn't passing PR.

Check out the sports betting page that phpbb.com links to. It's a whopping PR 0. According to archive.org, they've been linking to them since before January of '05:
    http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.phpbb.com

Doesn't appear to be helping them get above pr0 tho..

Their serp isn't too low though. It may be that they bought the link within few weeks?

"I remember reading that phpbb sold links a long time ago and google devalued all links from the site."

That seems surprisingly unfair. Does that mean that anyone who sells links cannot pass on their PR? But a huge proportion of links are paid for!

Does it also mean that buying links is no longer worthwhile? Google has too much power, methinks.

No Sorry but I did some personal research on it, this was way back when the Toolbar PR was updated every 14 days or so. It was pretty clear phpBB was not passing PR. Since that time there have been hundreds if not thousands of sites not passing PR and there is no easy way to know because the toolbar does not update often enough anymore and when it does update it is already old (2-3 mos.) PR that they are publishing to the toolbar.

So far every link I noticed has a PR6 or higher... Some at 9 as well.... Now that does not mean they were not already that way, but..

I wonder oif that is true, the webmaster who bought the link will be pretty pissed.
But why would Google disregard these links and not others? It could be legitimate links on phpbb site as well.

Static Button Ad - This is a standard sized button ad, 88px X 31px, that will appear on the left hand side of the download page below the phpBB logo information. You can have this button linked via our back-end advertising system so that you can track views and clicks.

    Pricing:

    * $350/month per Button
    * $300/month per Button for 2 buttons (only 2 slots are available on this page, own them both!)
    * Buy a full year and receive 2 months free! (e.g.: $3500/year for one button)

Seems this would be a good buy :) because of the page strength of 9
    Let me mail them :)

Why would Google permit link exchanges but not link sales?
