Is Keyword Density Still A Big Factor In SEO?

At our web design firm we have a copywriter that writes very good copy, and even though he only uses the specific keywords a couple times, the sites we deploy rank very high thanks to a bunch of other SEO techniques that we implement. Overall, we write copy for the visitors to increase conversion rates, not for spiders and googlebots.

We also have some clients who are dedicated to rank high for tons of keywords and give us their copy which is very lengthy, and full of repetition. We deploy it to their sites, then they get complaints from customers and clients that their sites are too copy heavy and hard to find the info they're looking for. Is there a happy medium out there anymore? Does the concept of keyword density still exist?

If it doesn, say for example the home page of a site has 100 words and a specific keyword was used 7 times, giving the page a keyword density of 7%. Is this density too high? What is the best keyword density to stay within these days if it still is a factor?

Keyword Density is no more a serious thing to bother about. Just make sure of the following things.
--> Your keyword density is somewhere between 2 to 5 Percent.
--> Keyword appears in the very first 200 lines of text.
--> Keyword appears in the very last line of the article.
Don't overdo this, nor stuff your article with keywords and variants.

    The best practices involve
--> Using associated keywords and synonyms throughout the article rather than using the exact word every time.
--> Insert tags properly to increase relevancy as a whole.

That's all for the keywords and keyword density awareness.

Yes, keyword density plays an important role. Before deciding on how much keywords you should place, Analyze your competitors. Check their keyword densities and let yours be the same as your competitors.

I don't believe keyword density is important any more - especially given Google's recent algorithm update. I do a lot of copywriting myself and have never paid any attention to keyword density because I write for readers rather than robots.

I have had a lot of success with my content by knowing where to use keywords and phrases rather than focusing on density.

I agree with searchblogger, you should write for your visitors and not for search engines. It is important that your article is of good quality and flows naturally.

Correct, keyword density is not usable metric nor has it been for at least a year.

I would agree. The keywords need to be there in H1 H2 and paragraph 1. But it doesn't need overdoing. It's gotta read well.

I would never put a percentage on it. Include them - and synonyms - where relevant and unobtrusive. So don't call your categories "new" or "used" but "new blue widgets" and "used blue widgets". But more important is inbound link theme and anchor text.

It is still a factor I think, but not as significant as it used to be. Search engines also do not only look for your targeted keyword but also related ones to see if your site is about that keyword.

Keyword density is more significant on Yahoo and Bing than it is on Google which values off-page SEO more than these other search engines. Also, if your keyword is overused on your site, search engines may penalize you for this.

Keyword density is still a lot bigger factor then most realize. Those of you saying your content is doing fine, and that you don't really pay attention to keyword density.. That is because with your writing style, you are more then likely using the correct keyword density without even realizing it.

Go write some repetitive articles with the same keywords and I can assure you that Google will penalize your content for in correct keyword density. ( Bad quality articles will never rank as high as articles where people payed attention to keyword density, as well as keyword relevancy.)

It may not mean as much as it did in the past, but it is still a factor to be considered.

Keyword density has always been that way. I think the search engines are starting to prioritize content that is longer than usual (500-750) and giving these types of articles more SEO power. This could be down to the keyword density or how many times the keyword has been mentioned but who knows for sure except Google!?

Apart from what the others have already said, keyword density is something that is worth considering. While many people would say 'I don't care' or 'It's sooo last year' thing, most of them don't realise how important it is to keep your keywords appear in a reasonable manner.

It should roughly be around 4 - 5% estimate depending on the words. It is quite important to keep in mind that no matter how 'natural' you've made your content, if you've unconsciously used your own keywords a lot of times, Google will look at it in the end and say "Hey, this doesn't look natural".

The length of content on web page does not create any problem. Long content are better to use more and more keywords. Normally it should be 2-3%. Obviously it is much. For using a specific keyword, extend your content. Otherwise you will be in losers.
