Why is a sitemap important for a website and how would you make search engines find it quickly?

the sitemap helps google's robots to visit your site faster and it's easier for them. that way, the bots can visit all the internal pages you include in the map even if your inner linking strategy has left an internal page out.
in order for SE's to find it quickly i guess i'd put a link to it on my HP.

Sitemaps are like roadmaps they tell search engines where all the pages are on your website.

there are 2 different sitemap type
    1. xml sitemap
    2. html sitemap

the best in my oppinion is
    2. html sitemap

why? because google crawl can reach link inside of this sitemap and also usefull to visitor to find what page they need :)

XML Sitemaps are useful for Search Engines.
HTML sitemaps serve both humans and search engines.

Google crawls XML sitemaps easier than HTML sitemaps. They even ask you specifically to upload your sitemap in XML format.

    hi

if your website has less than 200 pages and you are getting one-way in bound links from high PR websites then you don't need a sitemap as search engines will find your site through the sites linking to you and will then crawl your website. if you have a bigger website than this with weekly or daily updates then its best to submit sitemaps reflecting the info you want the search engines to know

Anyone reading this thread, just skip this post. This guy is completely wrong, has no idea what he is talking about and is spreading bad information. I don't give a damn if you have 10 million back links. If you have a page on your site that is not linked to from your internal link structure, Google CAN NOT crawl it. Google clicks links when it crawls your site. No link and it will not find the page. THIS IS WHAT A SITEMAP DOES - it's ENTIRE EXISTENCE is here so that Google may find pages on your server, that you want it to see, without having direct links to that page.

Sitemap helps to know the navigation of a website. It will helpful to visitors to better navigation. XML sitemap helps to crawler to know about the updated pages of the website
