How many dashes can my domain name contain ? If the domain name contain more than 2 dashed does it affect the site ranking ?
I don't think there's a strict limit - but I probably wouldn't buy a domain with more than two dashes. The most important factor in your ranking is links, and I don't think Google will penalise you directly for having an ugly domain, but you might be less likely to look genuine when putting your link in comments, articles, blog posts etc.
i think there is no limit of dashes/hypens if you don't exceed the maximum domain lenght. Its 63 i think.
You can have as many dashes as you want in you domain. Each label may contain up to 63 characters. The full domain name may not exceed a total length of 253 characters in its external dotted-label specification. And can use Letter, Digit and Hyphen. You will not be penalized by SE for it. But from a people's perspective it is better to have no dashes as people tends to forget the dashes and your returning traffic may end up somewhere else.
There isn't a limit to how many hyphens your domain name could contain. But it isn't recommended to have any hyphens whatsoever is your domain name. eg: "www.example.com" is better than "www.exam-ple.com" However you should put hyphens in your URLs. Hyphens are seen by search engines as word separtors. eg: "www.example.com/good-example/" is better than "www.example.com/bad_example/"
Actually, I've heard from an SEO friend recently that there is a penalty being given to domain names that have more than two hyphens in them. Two is okay, three or more is not okay. and the character limit is 63..
in my opinion domains with no dashes are more valuable and will rake better with search engines like Google and yahoo etc.because if the domains have more dashes then it will be harder to type it by the web search people.
I suggest not to use too many hypens at all or dashes. As far as I know, there are kinda penalties given to too many dashes on domains. But I am not sure.
I try to avoid dashes because it's makes your URL hard to remember. Although there is no written guide line from any search engine about the dashes.
I don't think it can be. I have see many of sites with dashesh in domain name and they are very reputed. If you analyse then you will find most of SEO compnaies website have dashesh that doesn't menan they are not doing good.
You can have any amount dashes but more the dashes you have it is bad for SEO. I forget the source coz i have read about this a very long time and it was said those sites are related as spam sites. May be on max you can have 2 dashes if you do not have the domain you are looking for.
