For local business sites I often use Hotfrog. Free, no recip, but you need to put in some content.

What do you expect from a trusted directory? What is a trusted directory? What is the advantage of paying $400 against $9.99? Do any of these directories charge for position?

But how do you determine whether a directory is trusted or not? Why is it important?

if it has a good pr and its into existence for quite a long time then we can call it as a trusted one

What about its content? What about its track record? For example if a site cleaned up its act after making a mistake and getting penalised would that worry you? Would you still list it as a trusted site?

I just checked 3 of the cheaper links on that list. For my category the internal page has no PR [PR=undef]
    for splashdirectory and kahuki

joeant has PR=5 on the internal page for my category.

Since the only value of these directories is the link. Is it really worth paying even $40 for a link from a page with no PR? I suspect the answer is no and even paying for the PR=5 to share a page with 50 other links is dubious.

Or do directories have some magic I don't know about?
    Please tell me, I'm curious.

Even dirjournal and botw internal pages don't have a PR.

So $400 or $160 for a link on a page which has no PR at all ??? I really don't get it. Why is it worth it to pay that?

One more thing I don't understand. Google know these are directories of paid links so why do they give them any PR since G claims to discount all paid links. OK, I admit I do understand that. The answer is because they're Google. :)

Why does the PR matter? There is a lot more to it than just the pr. PR is just one of the ranking factors and its importance has diminished considerably.

Do you think that spammers and fly-by-nighters would bother paying $199 for a directory listing? They won't. But a genuine business with long term goals would. Plus all these directories are human edited, further reducing the chance of crappy/spammy sites.

    @web site blogger

The answer is authority and trust. Spammers care about pr, while genuine webmasters care about trust & authority, they are there for the long run.

No. The trusted ones don't really make fatal mistakes. There are only a handful of sites that can be given the title of a trusted global directory (dmoz, yahoo dir, business, botw, joeant and maybe 2 or 3 more).

OK, I can see that could be true but not sure if I believe it is true or not. On the good side there is no link to a SEO service ion your sig which gives you as a poster somewhat more trust and authority ... :)

BUT .... Ummm, so google now rank based on "trust" and "authority" the definition of which are completely secret. Rather than PR which was at least partly open ... well sounds very much like google.

The only problem is that google only ranks on things it can make an algorithm for. I suspect that has not changed. Have to admit I follow the whole SEO world intermittently - not much for several years - so is it now widely thought google have a separate algorithm for trust-authority-rank. Then they count trust-links into your page plus PR link value in plus onpage factors pluss plus plus .....

I always did get a headache when I start looking at the twisted web and many opinions that has always existed around SEO.

Taking what you say at face value the PR5 joeant link is then considered a good deal right?
