Bing expands Facebook “Liked Results”

A few months ago, we announced an exciting partnership with Facebook to make search more social. As part of that work, we introduced Liked Results, which promotes links your friends have publicly liked or shared via Facebook. Today we are extending Liked Results to annotate any of the URLs returned by our algorithmic search results to all users in the US.

While we are very excited to talk about our next development, we’re all aware that it’s all part of a longer journey. This is the first time in human history that people are leaving social traces that machines can read and learn from, and present enhanced online experiences based on those traces. As people spend more time online and integrate their offline and online worlds, they will want their friends’ social activity and their social data to help them in making better decisions. Integrating with Twitter data 16 months ago was one step, and exploring Facebook’s rich streams is another.

If your friends have publicly liked or shared any of the algorithmic search results shown on Bing, we will now surface them right below the result.

What do you think of this move? I have a feeling this going to help Bing get up the ladder..of course its still way behind Google but the distance between the two will become lesser. And since Google is now competing with both Microsoft and Facebook, its going to be an interesting battle with more interesting moves coming in future

Sounds interesting. It'd be nice to see another search engine rise to the top, hopefully bing can do that.

 

Not sure how effectively it will work in practice, and what kind of an impact it will have. I assume we would have to be signed into facebook while searching on bing to see 'liked' listings? Does this also mean that Bing will have behind the scene access to crawl all of facebook's pages?

 

A great move by Bing

Bing announced that it has integrated Facebook Likes within its regular search results, similar to a move that Google made with social “shares” from Twitter and other services last week.

I don't think you'll have to be logged in to see the liked pages. I think the likes will count more like votes..like backlinks usually count as votes for SEO today. So basically if you had an article on a topic which got 1000+ facebook likes probably your site will rank high for the keywords in your title and content.

 

I don't think they are doing that. Not at least from the example they have given. When searching on bing you will be able to see what sites your friends 'liked' (if any liked sites match your search query). "If your friends have publicly liked or shared any of the algorithmic search results shown on Bing, we will now surface them right below the result."
Take a look at the sample serps. There is no change in serps, just the friends pictures and names under the site they 'liked'.

So i am just curious how can they tell who your friends are? Do we need to be logged in, or does facebook let them crawl all of their pages, and provide some info that bing can use to personaly identify those searching on bing.

 

That's a good way of Bing boosting their search engine rankings.

 

I do not see the winner in this competition, but I'm sure that people will make their choice. And the connection with social networks it's a good step for Bing in deed.

Competition is always good for consumers as we are the ones who are going to benefit from that right . Let them compete and bring for us some good results

I hope you are just taking the word battle out of context. If you are seriously against the likes of Google and Bing competing you should get the hell off of this forum and go apply for a government job.
