If .com is not available, try to get .net and if .net is also not available try to get org

My route is if com not available, try to get org, if org not available, try to get net, if com/org/net not available, move onto another name or include a suffix, avoid to use prefix

    Here's my order:

    .com
    .co
.(your country code) .us in my case
    (domain).(hack)
    .tv
    .me
    .org
    .info
    .net

Also, avoid choosing twowordssticktogether domain names and avoid dashes.

.net is dying a slow death. .org is a great extension but has nothing to do with "business' per se. So we are left with .com for companies....and there is a ton of room for .CO to fulfill a requirement in the market that .com cannot.

In my opinion, contry tld only work well at local search engine. If you use google.co.uk, the .uk domain will be great. So, look at the SEO aspect too.
And Cheat, can you show me the exact proof that .net is dying ? I think net is better than info [ in case with same promotion ]

.CO .TV .ME are the only ccTLDs out of all the 200 country .LL that are gTLDs.

.net stand for "Internet" & "network" and nothing to do with "company" and "commerce" like the .com for the public eyes.

So if your building a website for a big company or you are the company and want to do business, get ready to spend some 5 figure for that .com

The .net will always make you look inferior. If you always want to be 2nd at everything.

I personally don't like .net as an alternative to .com

I really don't understand why people choose .net as the second choice. If the .com is taken i'll just take the .TV or my own country code instead.

Back in the days .NET was used for network sites... Now is used as the second choice but not anymore with the new .CO...

Nike.net is a stupid domain name and have nothing to do with "internet network".
I mean WTF? Nike is an internet network ???
I rather have Nike.co if the .com is taken.
    Seriously...

Also .net = .no in russia.

Sometimes value comes with age. I suspect that's the case with .net.

Great info Cheat...why people including me use net as an alternative, because it works great as an SEO aspect, this is not a judge but from my experience. Because my target is top 10 search engine. Maybe I must learn how to manage another tld for SEO :) because I meet a difficulty when I use another tld than com/org/net. But, its very nice to discuss with you mate :) can show me your .TV at SERP buddy, and maybe you want to share how do you do that :p

I'm not pro .co but I suppose your statement is a matter of opinion. Ive never seen an advert for a .net on tv...that I can recall anyways. However o.co is running lots of commercials and that will stick in the minds of average, everyday consumers.

As for .net always having more worth than .co...impossible to tell. Time will reveal the answer but opinions certainly will not.

Sometimes value comes with age. I suspect that's the case with .net.

Dot nets are on tv for poker because they cant advertise the com because of gambling laws.

But hey, .net is not a bad extension, for me it just seems to pail in comparison to .com and I don't know whether it will stand the competition of upcoming gTLDs.

Extensions has nothing to do with SEO.

I google "Justin" and see "justin.tv" in first place on google while "justin.com" is virtually non-existant because of no content.

    justin.tv is ranked 431th while justin.com is ranked 132031th

Like i said: Extensions has nothing to do with SEO.

From the perspective of a COmpany it might make sense to own flowers.co vs. flowers.net.

    .co is prettier than .net.

    1) try the plural and check it meets your need.
    2) next preference is for .net.
    3) If you are focusing keyword related domain, check .com availability single hyphenated keywords.

Next time include an opinion poll for topic.

If .com is not available, try to get .net and if .net is also not available then try to get country specific domain like .in, .us, .uk etc according to no. of visitor from each country that you expected to your site.

If .com isn't avaiable then I usually go .net, depending on where you live then you start chasing country domains.

.org is my choice if .com is not available. Then, I go to .net...
Then if the .com, .org and .net are not available, I usually trying to find another name (with .com) that most similar with the name I want to register. Alternatively, if I want to catch local traffic, I get my local country domain.
