Dump 'Politics and Religion'

I know the 'Politics and Religion' sub-forum was added to 'General Chat' in order to get the crappy, argumentative threads out of there but it seems to be degenerating, even for 'Politics and Religion'.

Ok, maybe it's too late or these hate-filled threads would end up elsewhere - who knows?

Obviously I can choose not to read them, and for many, I don't, but lately, those that I do read seem to have taken a turn for the worse.

I can't see the situation improving anytime soon and cannot help but feel that particular sub-forum is polarizing this webmaster community and causing deep divisions where there needn't be any.

So, I suggest dumping that forum entirely and banning the subjects of Politics and Religion from the forums.

    Anyhoo, just a suggestion.

I agree with this, Its turning worse and i think atleast Religious threads should not be allowed anymore or atleast it should have very very strict rules. DP will lose nothing if you close religious threads but keep the general chat and political section. I am sure there are more bans and infractions in that section then in whole DP itself. There are some members who spend their time on DP just for that crap discussion and actually do not do anygood to community other then raising the post count and ofcourse the BandWidth. I hope there will be action taken against this or ensure the quality of DP :)

If you delete that section, the general chat areas will be full of political discussions. How about set things up that the political posts will no longer show up under "new posts" and nobody will even be able to read the titles unless he/she clicks on the category link?

I dunno, I don't think that they are going to be closed for some time, unless no one posts anything over there. So the best thing is to just ban your self from there and let the people do whatever they want till they are totally exhausted. The finally it'll close.

I highly doubt it, because a lot of new threads are being created there every single day. And some of the threads are so provocative, that I can't see someone not responding.

A zero tolerance policy towards political and religious discussions of any description anywhere on the forums would take care of the situation. General chat could be kept free of these discussions.

I honestly think they are an aspect of DP that could be done without.

I don't participate in or read the P&R forum, but I can tell how ugly it is just by the thread titles that appear in "New Posts". The problem is that these kinds of discussions will crop up whether there is a special board for them or not, and I suspect would take a lot more moderation to keep the other forums clear of them. At least this way they can all be dumped into one place.

I would like to point out, though, that the way people behave on the P&R forum does reflect on them as businesspeople as well. I would think twice about doing business with someone who appears willfully ignorant or hateful, so take that as you will.

Thats actually a great idea if you also add this into it
Those threads do not show up in User CP also so that you have to go to the category to see the reply's. I am sure that will work and will work good so Shawn please do consider it if you are not willing to delete the whole section :)

Zero tolerance is good but now i think Blogmaster suggestion is a billion dollar one :D

Here is a better idea, why not have a poll suggesting how many people really want the forum, and how many don't.

It's not about that, it's about the fact that General Chat will have news related threads going, and it's going to be far too easy for anything news related to turn into a huge political argument.

I liked a bit of discussion now and again and it was interesting reading others' opinions of various issues but lately the posts and threads are nothing less than tirades against one religion or another, one political viewpoint or another, one person or another.

There is little discussion, only an out-pouring of hate.

Sure, I can avoid it by not reading the forum but I'm more concerned about the polarization of differing viewpoints / cultures / countries ... it seems to me to be the creation of unnecessary schisms.

I think it's pretty much a reflection of what is going on in the world right now. It's not pretty, but that's what is going on.

You can subscribe to only certain forums so that new posts only show new posts from the forums you care about.

My best suggestion would be to report posts when necessary. Users will find themselves banned pretty quick when needed.
