Wildcard DNS with Go Daddy?

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by hammurabbi, Mar 6, 2006.

Does anybody here know whether it is possible to set up wildcard subdomains with a Go Daddy domain and hosting account?

I'm trying to set it up so *.example.com leads to my front page at www.example.com, where * can be any text.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

I'm having the same problem with Go Daddy right now.

I type in subdomain.mydomain.com and I get an error message. If Go Daddy doesn't support this for shared accounts I'm moving my hosting to another server.

Sometimes I think Go Daddy should have a list of what you CAN'T do on their hosting because even the most basic things tend to be unavailable on their hosting plan.

Thanks for the info. Any idea how to set it up? Adding * as a CNAME doesn't seem to work.

    Like this
    * <My Ip Address>

    and it works for me

I tried what you said to do by adding a * into the first part and my website's IP address into the second field. I didn't work. I've been trying to get the GoDaddy support team to help me, but I am not quite sure what they are trying to say.

I also tried doing * then @ for the A settings, but it wouldn't allow me to put the @ into the "points to" field.

    Anybody help with this one?

I think all good hosts should do this for you free with no problem.

I have a hostgator account and needed this doing to one of them. I sent them a simple e-mail 'Hi, I need Wildcard DNS enalbing on my account, can you please sort this for me? Thanks'

I received a reply just under 1 hour later, which said 'Wildcard is now enabled, anything else let me know'.

I would have expected GoDaddy would provide exactly the same service. Thats poor if they don't

I think hostgator seems to be an awesome host, personally I use GoDaddy, but they lack good service, but, I guess there's nothing such as a free lunch, but I'll contact them to see what they say and I'll post it here :)

Is your IP address shared IP or dedicated IP?
    Thanks.

I got response from GoDaddy support.
GoDaddy hosting supports Wildcard A records, but does not support Wildcard CNAMES. In order to use Wildcard DNS with your GoDaddy hosting, you need a Dedicated IP address for your hosting account.

Hi LWBBS, I use cheapdomainseller.com which is basically godaddy.com and it supports wildcards without a dedicated IP address. It says when adding an A record:

To create a new A record for this zone file, please enter the Host Name, "Points To" IP Address, and TTL in the fields below; then click "Continue."
An A record . short for address record . is a record within a zone file that maps a domain name to an IP address. Thus, you can use an A record to indicate the IP address you want your domain or subdomain to point to. Also referred to as a host or host name. For example, if you want your domain "domainnamegoeshere.com" to point to your home computer (whose IP address is, for example, 172.0.0.1), the A record would list "domainnamegoeshere.com", or "@" as the host and "172.0.0.1" as the "Points To" IP address. Entering "@" will automatically insert your domain name as the host name for the A Record. If the A Record is for the domain "www.domainnamegoeshere.com", the host name should be entered as "www".

Do not enter "www.domainnamegoeshere.com" as the host name for an A Record.

You can create a wildcard A record by setting the Host Name value to "*" (asterisk). The wildcard causes the server to respond with the IP address specified instead of an error if the subdomain queried does not exist within your zone file.

    Hello,

    Thanks for your information.
Use the godaddy domain panel, I can set wildcard DNS.
But for the shared hosting plan, you can't set wildcard DNS to
    map *.yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com.
