I am from Canada, but receive a large amount of income through online payments via PayPal - in US dollars.

Should I consider opening a us-based account? Why or why not?

It's always good if you can. On the map, Canada is only an inch away from US, so no prob for you to open one face-to-face.

Ok, i think it's good in a way that you can receive/initiate direct-deposit and cash out USA checks faster/cheaper.

Are there any banks that offer free checking accounts (I guess I need mainly/only deposits from PayPal and to write checks)

Most banks offer free checking these days. I bank through Bank of America and Citizen's Bank

Usually they charge 5.95 a month service fees if you receive direct deposit checks (such as from an employer).

Don't many Canadian banks offer both CDN and US dollar accounts?

When I was doing books for a Canadian company they had accounts in both currencies since they operated in both US and Canada.
