"Securing our borders" seems to be shorthand for "Securing our borders against gardeners, landscapers, and fruit pickers."

No amount of securing our borders is going to prevent or even reduce terrorism. The terrorists fly to our country through legal means. If we stop that, they will sail here. The terrorists have money, they aren't poor people sneaking across the border at night looking for a minimum wage job.

Personally I think it is pretty sad that a country that strove so hard to tear down walls and build bridges is now considering building walls...

The current tune seems to be ~Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free... unless they are Messicans... no Messicans please~.

That's pretty much it. My Mexican neighbors are the neatest, most hard working people on my block. Their kids are kind, well behaved and exteremly respectful. They speak both Spanish and English, which more than I can say for most Americans. Also, aside from myself, they are the only ones on the block that actually fly their American Flag day and night.

I think it was Ceasar Chavez that said to Kennedy, "we are the Irish of the 20th Century."

Terrorists ignore our laws. Those aren't loopholes, that is lax enforcement.

The pattern has been that they come here for a legal short stay, overstay their legal time, and then blow something up.

If we fix that, they will just move to blowing things up before their visa's expire. Net gain: 0.

Building a wall isn't going to do a damned thing to solve any of this.

I went with a girl that immigrated LEGALLY from central America. Most 'patriotic' person I'm aware of, but here conception of the Constitution was miscontrued ie she was sort of a in the closet ACLU memeber.

That's how she saw it, and almost everyone in her family thought the same thing, too. Culture. Good people though, just not people to talk politics with.
Ceasar Chavez was virulent against illegal immigration. Any REAL union worker doesn't like illegal immigration....I should know, since a great deal of my family is in one.

That's what I meant by a loophole ie lack of uniform enforcement. But more specifically they apply for driver licenses in cities/states that give them out to illegals. One applied under 86 amnesty...and others committed acts of fraud that our DHS is not prepared to handle on a large basis.

I forgot the number, but in the 86 amnesty they had a fraud rate that were fairly big. People were lying their ass off about how long they'd been here.

I think giving them as little time to plan things or organize, is probably the best thing that can be done. We should also consider working with Canada on being more restrictive of whom we let come here temporily, much less permanently.

There's a large Mexican population in Chicago and my wife teaches at a high school w/ a 40% hispanic student body. Mexicans are awesome people!

But unfortunately they're draining the resources of some of the border states. I'm not sure what the best solution is but the people in those states shouldn't have to shoulder the burden alone.

I was in Mexico last week for a wedding- check out the Mariachi they had at the reception!

It's huge in Cali and the border states, but it's literally growing everywhere. They want to work,...can't blame them. I blame the US government for not enforcing our laws enough, which would have put more internal pressure on Mexico to make changes a long time ago.

I know tons of legal latin immigrants that probably use the system ten times more than illegal immigrants. I would assume it's the fear. I even have a sort thing against some friends of mine, whom use the system but really don't need to...all of the latin. Things like financial aid, and medical assistance...it sort of makes me shake my head, but they find it to be normal...

There's a split...among the religious right and the general base of conservatives. They don't all share the same view on this.

Yeah. I don't really agree with Will on immigration. He seems to be pro-open borders. I'm not. I don't think this issue falls down party or ideological boundaries, like most others.

I think the border should be sealed up. If you are willing to break a law to come into the country, you are probably more likely to break more laws once you are here. Illegals are a drain on the economy; use up resources at emergency rooms, sponge off our too lax welfare system, because they are cheap labor, they stop progress in the fields they participate in (cheaper to higher a bunch of illegals than develop technological ways to pick the crops).

Legal immigration is totally different; but allowing everyone in, no matter how they get here, is totally wrong.

The Irony does not stop there. We were taught as kids about a place where freedoms were constantly being taken away and that we should fear such a goverment.

Now we have just that in so many ways. It's sad and scary.

    :D Classic liberal comment.

A lot of politics went on radio so working folks particularly blue collar (you know those BACKWARD HICKS that provide our food, fix our cars, build our homes, pave our roads, provide utilities (like Internet access), live on the road, commute to work, and don't sit behind behind a computer or TV all day) could be informed.

Of course that trend started over a decade ago when fewer "hicks" were online. It was mainly for people who wanted to stay informed and not be force fed one stream of thought from a monopoly that was/is the major news networks and Hollywood elites between 6-10 PM at night.

If one stays home all day in front a television or spent much time at all in front of one the inevitable outcome is that your brain turns to mush, you lose the ability to think for yourself, you can only feel not think, and in the final chronic stages you become a liberal.

Do even listen to what you are saying, you watch too much TV and you become a liberal?

Do you find in life things are difficult and often don't go your way?

Rush and Air America are echo chambers for people who just want what they already think reinforced

They are not for free thinking people who want a diveristy of opionions, which is probably why Air America is not as popular as conservative radio, plus there is already NPR which actually reports news.
