Squidoo

I've used Squidoo in the past, primarily for a garden nursery website I am the webmaster for.

I was wondering if any one knew just exactly how helpful Squidoo is in regards to being a backlink.

Basically the blog I have on Squidoo has nice pictures of the plants this garden nursery sells, linked back to the garden nursery website. It also has a few posts, but not much.

Call me crazy but I'm just hoping Squidoo is a good way to develop backlinks as a blogging site.

Squidoo is a very effective way to build backlinks and traffic to your website. Make one for each item/product on your website and link back to your site. You may want to look at making hubs from Hubpages using the same technique.

As a giant squid I am more than happy to give you any advice on Lenses you require - You can PM here or on squidoo, my squid user name is dandan594

Have any of you actually systematically tested the value of squidoo backlinks?

I'd be cautious about interpreting squidoo links as high value just because lenses or the site's homepage have high pagerank.

My experience with squidoo, so far, has been that it's been quite weak for driving traffic. The lenses just don't generate enough organic views without me constantly promoting them, and I don't really see the value of promoting squidoo lenses when I could be directly promoting my own sites instead. However, the click-through rate relative to the amount of traffic is okay. The quality of traffic is okay, too, but not great. But I'm not the most established squidoo user so it may improve over time. We'll see.

You can view my squidoo lensmaster page if you're curious to see how I use it, for getting ideas, or for getting some context for my comments here.

I haven't used Squidoo as a way for backlinks in over a year, nor have I noticed any lens' ranking very high for any terms that I have searched for. It seems that it used to be a decent tactic, but like many other things that were true 2 years ago, I think that the usefulness as an SEO tool has run it's course and now it's back to basics and natural links that are accumulated over time and with good content and marketing.

But instead of spreading out your resources and creating good content on another website just for the links to your main site. Wouldn't that good content be better served on your actual website and pick up natural links from other websites, and not basically just linking content from a lens to content on your website?

Why throw out a ton of articles to sites that are nothing but article dumps, instead of beefing up your own site with those articles and attracting all of the traffic and links directly?

I totally agree. Article marketing can be effective but only if you publish on sites that attract a great deal more traffic than your own. For example, I've found that publishing on EzineArticles and Buzzle is useful, whereas publishing on sites like GoArticles or lower-ranked sites is worthless and a waste of time and energy.

My thinking & you guys are free to rebut this is that if I post a great article on my website then post a good article on a Squidoo or HubPages, etc. that it will entice the individual to "click the link" which would go to the article with the great content. In other words I essentially use the good article as a teaser or bait if you will to get them to my site. The backlinks help of course, but this at least explains my reasoning.

I have a feeling that may because Ezine Articles & Buzzle actually look through what you are posting. Go Articles & 3 Step Ads (another one I know of) just allow you to submit your article & it approves as soon as you hit submit. I can say without reservation that each month I get 100 visits from stuff I've written on Ezine Articles, nothing from the ones that approve your article instantly.

    It's all about trust.

If you build valuable, informative pages/articles/posts and developed trust in the reader, then they will more likely follow links to your other sites.

Squidoo, for most, is a way of earning money, not so much as a way of getting a backlink. Once the Lensmaster finds a profitable niche, then they decide to create a website of that niche.
