If you're using Google's keyword tool it only gives you the advertiser competition. For analyzing the competition use TrafficTravis (free version is enough) or the trial version of MarketSamurai. As for keyword research Google's tool is about as accurate as you'll get and most of the keyword software tools use their data. But remember it's for PPC advertisers and not organic searches so use it as a guesstimate and I tend to figure low, and keep in mind that it's a daily average of the 12 previous months.

My vote goes to Market Samurai... it uses your Google Adwords account to do all the keyword research and analysis. I also use their SEO competition tool and see which keywords I have better chances to rank first page with

There are lots of keyword tools out there....Try using the Google adwords keyword suggestion tool...It will not display the counts but it shows the volume of searches per day/week/month. :D

There are many different tools out there that are used to determine the best keywords for your site as well as judge their competition and monthly searches. These tools are built keeping in mind different factors so a difference in the results can be expected. No tool is perfect and no tool is worthless. It pays off if you listen to the results of every tool. As Google Tool is by Google and you would want to rank in it so I think that you should listen to what tool has to say. I do.

The Google keyword tool is great for finding keywords, but the competition for those keywords must not be overlooked or you will never get decent page rank, which is everything. I use Market Samurai for that.
