What do you guys think of guest blogging (Writing a post as a guest for another blog)?
Has anyone used this approach successfully?

I have allowed guest blogs on a number of my sites.
In particular I have used Brad Callens SEO Linkvine to automate this process.
The person posting then gets a backlink.
Problem is that the quality of blogs posted is highly variable - and I have found some using profanities I needed to quickly delete.
The paid version of SEO Linkvine also allows you to post spun articles. I tried it for a while but didn't find it worthwhile.
If you are willing to spend time writing quality articles then I'm sure you'll get one way backlinks - but like all things online, you need to balance your time against the value created, and this may well depend on the niches you are in and value of each link.
Going for backlinks on low PR site isn't worth while.
But if you can find higher PR sites that let you embed keyword anchor text in the articles that works well - just takes more of your time.

Would it not be better to write the articles, host on your website or as a downloadable pdf, and then just create simple links on the blog. This is better for everybody.

You will have to take permission from the blog owner on which you want to post your own article. Normally they allow and I think it is very useful thing to promote your blog

Unless it's a large blog which will give you a lot of exposure, why not write your content for your own site?

My personal view is that this is the best method. Does anybody have evidence that posting to other Blogs really works?

Well the idea is to write on another blog and get a link back or some traffic back to your own site. Like steve said, I think it would only be worth it if it was on a big blog. But I see that not a lot of people take that approach.

You’ve heard the blogger cliché “content is king”. It’s a lot like the real estate industry’s “location, location, location.” It turns out blogging and real estate have something in common: for both, you need content and location

Guest Blogging works GREAT on larger and highly ranked blogs.

It is a WIN-WIN situation - you gain exposure and a new wider audience of that particular blog and the owner gets new content for his blog.

Just make sure, that you are a at least a decent writer and the blog is worth the effort.

It is used a lot by the pros.

I dont think any sane blog owner can turn down such an enticing offer.

It all depends on the blog you are guesting at. Is it a high traffic blog, with a great deal of participation from readers? In this case, you'd not only get a back link which, if the blog is high PR, will serve you will in your own quest for high rank in SERPs, but you'd benefit from readership spilling over to your site through the link...

I've done it - not only does it provide free links, it also, brings in traffic - especially if your guest post is written real well, and gets links.

    For website owners:
Depending on the credibility of the author, this is a great way to add fresh content to your website and eventually earn more readers and higher serps.

    For guests:
If the site you're writing for has a good PR, then it will be worth making the effort to write a good post. The backlink will be worth it.

Yes as another posted it's not only location but content that are king/s on the internet. Whether your posting a guest post/article or submitting your articles on a directory, heck even posting a review on amazon.com or something as simple as posting a response on a forum like here can usually only help you than hurt you. It's all about creating that backlink "juice" to point people back to you are your site/blog.

Just be sure to be clear on what the bloggers requirements will be as a guest writer. Mainly that they will 1) not redit your article and 2) will keep your signature and a backlink back to your site so you can get the credit and the benefit of doing this to being with.

Well, it works alright if you post on famous blogs such as Ptoblogger.net and similar.
If you write a really goof post than a lot of the people will actually check out your site and you may get
    some new readers.
However, I always find it hard to produce quality articles for other peoples websites, because I want
to post the quality articles at my own websites. :p

One method is to have the article on your website, and then offer a .pdf file with hyperlinks to anybody that want a version on their website. When anybody reads the .pdf, there is a clickable link to your site. Seems to work well for me. They and you get benefits this way.
