What do you do if you can't remember a friend's name?

Has this ever happened to you: Suddenly you faced an old friend and you can’t seem to remember his/her name. What do you do?

I just use standard phrases like bud, buddy, hey man, and so on until it comes to mind

Sometimes we just forget things and we just need a minute. So what would you do in this situation?

That's funny; I'd probably wait until they were distracted and try and get a glance at their driving licence or credit card.

If I don't have his or her phone number then I ask, once I get it I call him/her and act dumb and say hi is this so and so..... then ask oh then who is this ? lol hey it worked few years ago:)

I use mnemonics. These are devices to remember things. For example, if my friend's name is Andrew. I use the mnemonic below:

Andrew drew a picture. An-drew. I could also make a story. He took out a sketch book and-drew a picture.

    Here's another example:

Let's say I want to remember the name William. I can use this mnemonic: Will-ham. We have two words. Will and ham. So I will form an association. He will take a piece of ham and throw it in the oven. We just formed an association between the two words thus making it a lot easier to remember. You then link the association back to the name and that's it.

I imagine in my mind that Andrew drew a picture and I remember the name:) This is because I form an association.

If they were real friends of mine, I wouldn't forget their names. Aquaintances, however, are another story; so what I do (if I forget their name(s)) is just ask for their name(s) again.

I am not sure about old friends but something like this often happens to me. I must admit I have sad memory. I don't just remember the name but I don't even recognize the people I might have met a while ago. Sadly, they end up recognizing me, tries to smile starring at me but .....

    Prolly the best answer.

Is it that hard to admit that you forgot his/her name? If I were in that situation then I'll just be dead honest and would ask her/his name again.
