How a proxy get traffic

    Hey,

I'm making this thread to explain how a proxy gets traffic, for people who posted in http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=153779 and PM'd me for this.

Well basically a proxy will get a site, and show it from your site. So google.com will be http://yoursite.com/somefile.php?q=google.com roughly. This means everything including the IP will come from your server. Because your site won't be blocked in most places, people can use it to bypass filters at work etc.

Also many countries like China, and most of the MEC have filters on the sites they can browse. The filter will be for the whole country's Internet. Proxies will bypass these filters also. This is where you get most of your traffic from.

AdSense works with multiple languages, and people from the MEC and China etc will be able to view ads in their own language and will be able to read them.

    ~Sohan.

Thanks Sohan, for nice explanation. Another important question can it create any legal trouble because now your site is offering a portal for everybody to surf anonymously so their IP is blocked but my IP is visible and if they visit crazy sites which may include child pornography or underground hacking site...don't you think its a bigger risk?

What is your experience on this?

I have always wondered if you can make money with a proxy. Isn't the traffic going to be a real killer?
What about adsense. If the website you are showing has already adsense on it, won't you show two different adsense id's on the same page possible also exceeding the max number of ads?

Well I cover my self with a simple TOS, and on the browsing pages I just put We are not responsible for anythign below this like and add a <hr>.
I only place ads on the homepage. The homepage alone can earn $20-40 a day.

I have other reservations against proxies and image hosting and all those popular schemes. Mostly its legal liability (whats the reason for people to use proxies? - try to give an honest answer).

Yeay, we have a winner. You'r prize: You are free to design a proxy site.
    Yes, thats what I meant.
Next round: Who will the lawyers turn to?
Hint: Think Napster, did the users get sued first?

My proxy, instantunblock.com, has a legitimate use. Web filters often block harmless websites that are necessary for a person or work or for school work. Instead of having to contact IT and wait a while to have the site unblocked (and delay your work), you can just use my website. This is especially useful if you only need the site once for a minute but it contains information you really need.

In China, the government censors everything, even things that are legal here in America. Some Chinese people turn to proxies to liberate themselves from tryrannic control.

Believe it or not, only a small percentage of the sites viewed contain pornography. Most of my traffic is people viewing harmless sites like Myspace or Bebo.

So the use of your proxy is to circumvent webfilters?
Way to go. How long do you think it will take and your url is on the list? Not a successful long term business model in my eyes.

BTW: Napster did have a legitmate use too, So did Grokster, Morpheus, Kazaa .... Only people didn't use it for that.

Lol thanks for the prize... I would have done so long back.. but for some reason I find it a pain... Many users do create proxy sites... and they help a lot of people... Like for Ex: Chine... stupid filtering there.. But there are so many PSSWD Stealers out there.. Id think twice about using a proxy site... they arn't called honey pots for nothing.. many just catch users id and passwords and later use it for their own evil deeds... However there are few left.. who just think about making money from ads :D

i got one of my other sites accepted into adsense, and then added the ads also to my proxy site, its earning money and google has contacted me or anything so i dont think they mind. note: i only have them on my homepage, not every proxied page as im pretty sure that violates their TOS

Google ads can not be displayed twice (2 ID at once) because you can't display them on proxified pages (is against TOS of Google). Only the adsene ID code for the visited page is shown so no messup.
Regarding the other problem, you can block some sites from the proxy script so they can not access child porn, xxx, other illegal activites.

I have had great success with adsense on my new proxy site. I did introduce popup based ads, and notice quite a decline in traffic. So I removed the popups, and slowly the traffic increased.

I have been having a few problems with CPU usage, however. I don't think Bluehost's server are up to it :/
