Schoolgirl Arrested for Asking to Change Groups

I found this story amazing. From the first line of the story, it implies the girl wouldn't "sit" with a group of Asian students because they didn't speak English but as you read it you see that they were supposed to be working in groups and the 5 kids she was with weren't speaking English (Only one could speak it).

I think any kid (or adult for that matter) would ask to change groups seeing as how they have no chance to actually participate.

Did she really need to be arrested for that?

This was in Salford Manchester, and they wonder why the BNP are getting such a stronghold. Integration means BOTH parties accommodate each other! The problem we have is that many ethnic groups come to the UK (as these families have), can't /won't learn English, and as such are unable to integrate

In the UK we have an integrated educational policy. LEA (Local Education Authorities) have a LEGAL duty to ensure the education of ALL children (at school or at home). Schools MUST be integrated, we are starting to see Muslim only schools in the UK funded by the state, which IMO is a dangerous precedent. We have always had Catholic schools in the Uk, but they were largely funded by the Catholic church.

    This country.

Obviously a dodgy school though. Don't remember having a full time police presence when I was at school.

The school is in Salfor and is on Special measures, it had the lowest pass rate in greater Manchester. But that does not excuse the behaviour. LITTLE WONDER it is failing if this is the level of understanding its teachers posess ;)

Absolutely, no one is saying that the students (they had just arrived in the country) aren't entitled to an education but common sense needs to be applied. If they can't speak English, what possible benefit can they be getting. Obviously, the teacher can't even talk to them so to ask a student too then arresting her when she can't is insane.

I would hope they were offered classes in English in the school and maybe after a period of time they could be part of group projects like this one.

The real problem is that this is viewed as a political problem rather then an educational one. Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows you have to understand the language of the country you are in to benefit from an education. If they were 5 Welch students who had no English, would the girl have been arrested for asking to change to a different group?

I guess being a teacher is just like any job though. The best ones work at the best schools and vice versa.

Unfortunately a lot of these teachers in schools with such low standards and so many problems have become babysitters rather then teachers.

If anything that situation presented an oppurtunity but instead it turned into a needless police investigation.

I haven't read the 4 year old being arrested for molesting a woman yet

We also have catholic schools here in India. I have studied in one ;)...Its compulsory in my school to talk in english ONLY. We never had problems with this...Our prayers were for Lord Jesus & Mother Mary but noone till date has any problems with that...infact a majority of students in such schools are Hindus and lots of muslims too. Many parents feel pride in sending their children to catholic schools no matter what religion they belong to...Somehow I feel this would be changed soon by such stupid acts. If they have problems in singing 'Vande Matrum' then I am sure they will have problems in praying for Lord Jesus & Mother Mary soon...nothing of that sort yet (thank God) & I hope it continues. Amen!!

In England you can get arrest for 'Racism'?

Holy fuck!? Damn, talk about fuckin pushing liberal views on people.

Now I don't think people should hate people based on skin color, but I absolutely find laws against personal non-violent hate...horrendous!
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take away ones own mental space....take away right of association....where's the freedom? Freedom to think like 'them', and be like 'them'....whom ever is the authority to be 'them'.

This shit baffles me! One of the worst stories I've looked at this year.

In Wales we have Welsh medium schools where only Welsh is spoken. And as YFS said :( LOGIC should dictate to teachers what to do, NOT legislation (well he didn't actually say that, but that was what I read from his post LOL) Logic dictates that at this stage in their education, they simply are not ABLE to integrate, so what 'should' have happened was that the teacher placed them in groups together where they could progress their education at a good speed, AND increase their knowledge of the English Language through bi-linual friends! but THAT would possibly be seen as racist under UK law, and certainly not allowable under LEA guidelines. which state basically, They MUST intergrate (even though they are not able to learn because they will not understand a word being spoken! )

30 kids to a class @ 5 to 6 in a group, = 6 groups they had a girl in an all male group, so she was uncomfortable from the start, not being able to comunicate with them, made her even more uncomfortable. the school acting as it has, has made her even more uncomfortable.

wouldn't want to put one of them guys in each of the other groups so they didnt understand what was being talked about, i mean he might have made a complaint about the school being racist for forcing him to mix with people he cant understand.

the school has scared the shit out of a schoolgirl to prove a point of it's own incompedence.

the school failed maths, well no wonder when you put a girl in a group of 5 guys that cant speak english, and put one girl in that group, that gives her less than 20% of a chance of understanding anything said, with the one that could speak english.

i cant understand them? just who has the serious problem here? she was born here, thats not her problem, she speaks english, thats not her problem either.
it's the teacher that delt with this, thats the nutcase with the problem.

Add to that age also, it's now illegal for employers to state age ranges is job adverts or to ask for 'experience'
