Wait a moment. Didn't Jesus earn your salvation by dying on the cross? Don't you get salvation just by accepting him as your Lord and Savior? I understand that there are many different Christian sects, but I thought that salvation through good works was out of style with Christians these days?

Christ didn't "earn" anything for us, but he put forth his own life in order for us to have an abundant life. It was God's plan for Jesus to lay his life down on the cross and be crucified. We don't need to earn anything here on earth in order to be forgiven. God made us human, and with being human, we are able to have free will. God could have made us robots and forced us to love Him, but He wanted to let us make that decision on our own. Therefor, we able to love Him and He gives us grace. Grace is shown through the faith that God is the almighty creator fo the earth and everything around us. God is beyond our comprehension. We have limited thinking. As humans, we see that there's a beginning and there's an end -- to everything. God is beyond that comprehension so much that He doesn't have an end nor a beginning. Something that we can't comprehend.
Some Christians believe you have to do something to get into heaven. Others read the Bible and see where it clearly states that by grace we are saved, not of works lest anyone should boast. What we do is a result of salvation (and our sinful nature) not a cause. The stumbling block for many is what it takes to be forgiven. Some people think it's some huge process but Christ asks God in the Lord's prayer to forgive us as we forgive others. So if you put people through a whole ordeal before you'll forgive them then that's how God will treat you. If you are quick to forgive others, God will be quick to forgive you.
