You do article marketing for various reasons but mainly to gain exposure through backlinks, etc. You write articles relating to your website and then you would submit them to major article submission sites. I mainly stick to a few top article submission sites myself. No point in spreading the same content over 50 sites unless you are posting unique content on each article sites. Article sites don't send you much traffic in my opinion but they will send you some traffic over time. The biggest win is a link back to your site. This will provide you the opportunity to rank high on search engines for the keywords you are targeting... It is a very broad question but I hope I got you started off on the right path.

First there is a need to do some Keyword Research... You can use the FREE Google Keyword Tool. Study and search for keywords that people are looking for. The whole object is to Drive traffic to your squeeze page or website. Brainstorm... What is your site about? The Title is vital... A lot of people think that the content of the article is the most Important... But really what grabs the attention of the reader is the title. Start Your Title with your actual Keyword. Use your keyword 2 or 3 times throughout your article but no more. You want to take full advantage of your resource box... I usually only submitted my article to few top directories. However, I do have a question if I submitted my articles to 100s article directory. What could be the affect to SEO?
I think the first step is to find a niche or topic area that you know well and passionate about. Find out what information people are looking for in that niche. This is where keyword research etc. comes in. Many people failed article marketing. because they started bottom up. Looking for profitable keywords in areas they know nothing or have no interests about.

One of the methods I am starting to use is article spinning. This way you can take one article and make multiple versions of it to spread to various article directories. (aka different content). If you are a good writer and you have plenty of time on your hands you don`t need any software but if not you could automate it or get a freelancer to do it for you , and remember spinning them helps a lot.

Just to add - Article submission is another great way to build relevant one way back links. Quality articles are submitted to well established article directories. In exchange for the content, the author is allowed to add two or three text links at the end of each article.
ya the thing you really want to happens is have other sites publish your Ezine/Goarticles/Articlebase article content on their sites giving you even more backlinks, jsut remember in order for people to want to republish your content it has to be great!
I just started using The Market Magnet (www.themarketmagnet.com), and already I'm seeing great results! In it Neil Russell recommends not using software for mass submission cos google is one step a head and will give you a slap for it and it may take months to get back.
