Selling unrelated affiliate products on a website- good idea?

Discussion in 'ClickBank' started by Michelle., Jan 16, 2011.

I recently purchased a website (seemed like a good buy at the time) because of the search volume. I made the decision in a haste and did not pay attention to the CPC- there are no profitable keywords I can use for this site- it's based on providing info.

My site has hit page one and is getting a decent amount of hits but there was no adsense revenue to speak of so I ditched the adsense realising that even if I did get clicks it would be cents and not worthwhile. I'm not part of any CPA network so that's not an option. I don't have the time right now to try and get accepted into one.

I'm familiar with clickbank so wanted to know whether any marketers had success selling unrelated products? and what the conversion rate is like?

My site is based on funny quotes taken from a popular comedy so I'm thinking going for a popular watchmovies online product with a high gravity, writing a review but trying to make it somewhat relevant to "funny quotes" if that's possible.

Just looking for a bit of advice on how to approach this before I start... any ideas would be great.

You may get some conversions but not may.

Untargeted traffic just doesn't convert. The website you are describing seems like something people would visit just to spend their time - not money. So there's little monetization potential there

You can try collecting emails and then emailing people some offers.

You can go with your idea & see what happen. There are thousands of products in clickbank, if you research properly there have chance to get some rated products.

Well, the movie affiliate link would be the closest that comes to mind so you should try it out and write a detailed review about it on your site. Then have every page on your site link to that review, at the top and bottom of the page (like putting your own banner on your own site). That way it will funnel all the traffic to the review and if it makes sense to the visitors, you might get conversions but this niche is really hard to monetize.
Take a look at what other jokes sites do to monetize their traffic, you're certainly not the only one.

There is always some physical product available to sell that is related to TV and movies.
Whether it is Memorabilia or Books there is something.

Trying to sell unrelated items rarely ever works.

karabas, I know that now- I guess this is a lesson for me! however I'm averaging 100 uniques a day which is not bad so even if I get 1 sale a week I would still consider the site a success.

Imdadc, I was thinking of going for satellitedirect (it's unrelated but it's a high gravity product that converts very well with targetted traffic as I have tested it before, what it will be like with untargetted traffic I have no idea. I guess there's only one way to find out.

backlinkexcellence, I was looking at what other 'joke sites' do to monetize and it seems to be adsense, they're probably earning peanuts because a lot of the ads that appear seem to pull up completely irrelvant ads like "insurance quotes" "home insurance quotes" which initially hapened to me even when I installed the "relevant adense" plugin.

rmeeuwsen, yes there is, the problem with this is Amazon's pay out rate is 4% so selling a DVD for $7.99 for a few cents commission is not really worthwhile, I could try it but I'm gathering if they're looking for quotes on a particular movie they probably own the movie already. I'm going to try option 1 (tv product) and if that fails I'll try DVDs.

I wouldnt suggest putting unrelated affiliate products on that site because number 1-its not really targeted, and number 2- they are going to have to make a purchase which means taking out there credit card. I would recommend getting into some CPA networks like MaxBounty, ClickBooth, NeverBlue, or COPEAC, and putting zip/email submits on that site, you would get a better conversion rate because no one has to take out their credit card. Even a free trail offer could work well and it pays better, but remember TEST, TEST, TEST, until you know what works.

    Good Luck!

Thank you, I will try over the weekend. I just have to come up with a plan on how to get accepted, I've tried in the past with no luck.

I was also thinking the other day that if I could CPA zipcode submits I could do very well with the site, it seems like such a waste to not monetize a site that gets 100 uniques a day.

you going to waste your ad space by trying to sell unrelated products. Why Adsense you think content-sensitive?

Its pretty easy to get accepted, nothing to worry about. After you apply make sure to give the network a call right away or get in contact with a affiliate manager over AIM. It should be easy for you since you already have a website, just tell them what your plan is and what you want to promote. Just talk to them like any other person, a lot of people freak out when they have to talk to a CPA network over the phone. The main reason why networks want a phone call is to just know that your a real person, and not a scammer and to also make sure you wont be using black hat methods. And if your new to CPA that ok also, let them know that your new and your testing the waters. Make sure to ask your AM for advice and tips also, a good relationship with your AM can go a long way.

Hope this helps if you need anything PM me.

I read this works! giving them a call apparently works 99% of the time. I'd be pretty confident to talk to them, I know what to do to direct traffic legitimately and have no problem getting that across to them. I also read CPA networks are hard to get into because each account is assigned an account manager so they try to weed out time wasters.

    Thanks again.

Tried everything, it kept pulling up quotes on the different types of insurance. It seems there aren't enough ads on this particular topic I'm writing about. The adsense bot just doesn't seem to recognise that the ads are completely irrelevant, also the ones that were such as "funny quotes, love quotes" etc weren't getting any clicks so I'll go with djt1102 and try out CPA...

It can work only if you have too much traffic to your site like you can expect 1 conversion from 20000 visitors

It can work but the conversion rates may be rather low. Might be a lot of work for little return. Best of luck
